Product Description

Color: Matte Black

The original Bullet Space Pen was conceived in July of 1948. Paul Fisher was soon machining a new pen design shaped from solid aluminum. It became the first Fisher ball point pen, the #400 Bullet Pen, is arguably the most popular pen of the twentieth century. This pen is now all brass with a Matte black finish. When closed, the Bullet Space Pen is the perfect size to carry in your wallet, pocket, purse, car glove box, organizer or toolbox. When open it's a full sized, evenly balanced writing instrument. The patented ink cartridge was designed by Paul Fisher for NASA in the 1960's enabling it to write in temperatures from -30 to +250 degrees Fahrenheit, under water, in zero gravity, at any angle, even upside down.

It is very good pen. Somebody commented before that it's only a pen, whatever. I have a Cross, Waterman and a bunch of random stick pens in between. This is really good, for a "sub-compact" it has really good feel, better than my Cross and the ink flows really well. The only one to compare ink flow and consistency to is the Pilot G2, just as good.

The only problem I had when purchasing was with the descriptions, there was nothing to put it in context. The closed size is maybe an inch longer than Chapstick and half as thick. The opened size is maybe a quarter inch less than the G2 gel pen.

The ink dries really quick and is a really good companion to my Moleskine notebook. The mini G2's were my first choice but the ink took too long to dry and was always smudging. This is a premium compared to the G2 but you won't regret it.

I bought this pen to keep in my pocket so I would always have one handy. Here's how it's looking after about a week of heavy use:

PROS:
- As advertised, it "just works" all the time. No scribbling to get the ink flowing, no shaking or upright storage or anything else. It just writes smoothly all the time. One of life's little annoyances... solved!
- Study construction--this feels like high-quality, matte-finished metal.
- Fits very comfortably in a pocket--much smaller than a normal pen when closed, and all the edges are rounded so nothing pokes or catches.
- Pleasant to hold, with a nice heft (though it is not heavy)--pen is full sized when opened.
- Matte finish is easy to grip and doesn't slip around in the hand.
- Ink flow is very smooth; ink dries almost instantly and is not prone to smudges or drops.

CONS:
- Ink is not as dark black as I prefer.
- Due to weight distribution and perfectly round shape, it is almost guaranteed to roll off any flat surface and onto the floor. It's too heavy and smooth to park behind my ear (it just falls off). Basically I have trouble setting it down anywhere--it has to stay in my hand.

This is a great pen. It is compact, with the end protected until it is used. It actually will write on a variety of surfaces that normally will irritate people trying to write on with an ordinaly pen. The only problem is the lack of a good clip. The version of the pen with a clip is a failure because the clip keeps falling off until you lose either the clip or the pen.

You know, for a pen that is not very glamorous, for a pen that looks like it belonged, at some point in time, in Batman's function-over-form-hands, it is remarkably attractive. The design is very sound, it has what appears to be a locking mechanism to keep the pen tip in place so no one loses their pen accidentally (17 dollars may not be a lot of money to those of us stocking up for the apocalypse, but it is to me.) It writes upside down, I have yet to find a material that can be written upon underwater, perhaps wood will do...but yeah, it is, like many a reviewer has said, not exactly a fine writing tool, but it is a darn good one in terms of toughness, waterproofing, sweatproofing, drop-proofing, and more. I doubt someone could do damage to this pen indirectly unless some unavoidable catastrophe struck, like your pen got ran over by a car, or it got shattered by a bullet, or something like that. Its pretty good stuff. Don't hammer it through bricks or plywood, don't step on it, basically, don't do anything unusual to it, and it will last for as long as steel, tungsten carbide, and brass last, which will be significantly longer than the buyers life, obviously. So, any buyer that needs a great writing tool that is above the ordinary in pure, unadulterated functionality, look no further than this incredible little black pearl of a pen. It will serve you unquestionably well. Oh, and try not to lose it, future buyers, because it is easy to lose in its tiny package. Have fun with the Fisher Space Pen everyone, and peace out.

The Fisher Bullet Space Pen works at any angle as promised. However, it does not write as well or as smoothly as many considerably cheaper ballpoint pens at a fraction of the price. If you've used a decent ballpoint, you will know that the writing experience of the Space Pen falls short.

Who should buy it: Someone looking for a pen that will write at a moment's notice in any situation. You can put this into your front jean pocket on a daily basis and not notice it's there but have it handy for when the time comes.

Who should not buy it: Anybody who expects to use the Space Pen with any predictability - i.e. if you take down notes regularly. I would choose to use just about any other ballpoint pen I own before this.

My go to pen as of now is the Zebra F-701. Far better writing experience, and having it clipped in my jean pocket I never notice it's there but it's much easier to find without doing any searching around the pocket.

After seeing many reviews here and on other sites, I decided to go ahead and purchase my first Fisher Space Pen. I've had mine for about a month now and I absolutely love it! It is compact when closed and won't catch on anything when it is in my pocket-I don't like carrying a purse. I have the brass one and it fits very well in my hand. When closed it is just a little bit longer than my middle finger. When open and with the cap on, it is almost exactly the same length as a Papermate Flexgrip with the cap off.
It writes smoothly on many different surfaces and it is always ready to write. When I first got the pen, I switched out the black ink with a blue refill. They have been in my desk drawer, just laying in the tray without anything covering them. The original "refill" works now just like it did when I got the pen. I like the pen so much that I purchased a few others.
