Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Retelling Bible stories through the eyes of a well-known character from scripture is a time-honored tradition in faith-based novels, but although this book offers a serviceable overview of the life of Jesus, it doesn't always make for compelling fiction. Peter, a "grumpy" disciple of Jesus with small dreams and lots of bluster, narrates the tale in the first person, speaking earnestly to contemporary readers with the understanding that they already know how the events will unfold. Through Peter's running conversations with himself, Jesus, his brothers and the reader, Huntsperger fleshes out the original Gospel accounts and analyzes the motivations of Jesus and his followers. "We were just ordinary people who somehow ended up standing next to the most extraordinary man who ever lived," muses Peter. The author uses plenty of scripture throughout the novel (even to the point of having Peter quote himself!), but the paragraphs can be long and preachy. In one of the best and most honest moments, Peter witnesses Jesus turning water into wine and plots a get-rich scheme. Less impressive scenes include humor that falls flat, slow pacing and forced or unnatural dialogue. The writing feels almost like revival oratory, with consecutive sentences using the same phrases repeatedly to drive the points home. Readers who are familiar with the life of Jesus will find few fresh insights or information; those unfamiliar with the Gospels may enjoy having events strung together as one continuous story.

From the Back Cover

He was an ordinary man with ordinary ambitions.

Until Jesus entered his life.

Simon, a fisherman, works hard to provide for his family and dreams about expanding his business. He lives an ordered and predictable life until one fateful day when he meets a man who will change everything.

In this spellbinding first-person account of a rugged fisherman-turned-follower, you'll experience the Gospel story anew through Simon Peter's keen eyes. The miracles, the trial, the tragedy, and the triumph--those familiar stories come alive as never before. With sincerity, humor, and faithfulness to the Scriptures, talented author Larry Huntsperger takes you along a gritty spiritual journey you will not soon forget.

For more than twenty-five years, author and pastor Larry Huntsperger spent hundreds of hours studying New Testament documents in preparation for writing this fictional first-person account of the life of this enigmatic disciple. He is a graduate of Seattle Pacific University and studied with Francis A. Schaeffer at the L'Abri Fellowship in Switzerland. Huntsperger and his wife, Sandee, live in Alaska where he writes and pastors at Peninsula Bible Fellowship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Questions Needing Answers... Startling!, April 2, 2003
By

I started reading what I thought was a little "historical fiction" about Peter and the Master. About half-way through I realized I was reading about the Master and me- but it was still Peter's name on the page. How did author Larry Huntsperger do it? Why did I cry every time Jesus looked with love into the eyes of Peter? Why did I rejoice and tremble for every step Peter took toward understanding his Master better? Why was I able to experience the love of Christ like never before? Why, for the first time in my life, am I buying a bundle of books to pass out to my friends who want to walk closer to the Master? I feel like an author finally did justice to my impression of the biblical Jesus. This is an exceptional write by a master storyteller who is bound by passion to stay true to the Word!

5.0 out of 5 stars He's got it!!, January 27, 2003
This review is from: The Fisherman: A Novel (Paperback)
Sometimes I wince when someone asks me to read a novel based on a Biblical character. I winced when I was given this one. No more. You are going to love this book! Not only that, you are also going to read the Biblical accounts of Peter and the words of Peter in the Bible with fresh insight and depth. This is a case when a "sanctified imagination" has become a gift to Christians who love Peter and, even more, love the One he followed and worshiped.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss reading this one!!, January 27, 2003

I found this book to be very moving!
It was a "tear jerker" for me! *~* I could hardly lay it down.
This book made me feel like I was actually there and experiencing the emotions as well as the actual events Peter, the main character, was describing. This book made the gospels "come alive" for me. I liked the way the author's time line of all the gospel events gave the story a smooth flow and the epilogue at the end was extraordinary!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who, for any reason at all, ever wished they could have lived during this time when Jesus actually lived and walked this earth with His disciples. It makes one feel like they were there. It makes you understand that the disciples were just ordinary folks like the rest of us.
What an "eye-opener", A wonderful read!!!
