5.0 out of 5 stars Questions Needing Answers... Startling!
I started reading what I thought was a little "historical fiction" about Peter and the Master. About half-way through I realized I was reading about the Master and me- but it was still Peter's name on the page. How did author Larry Huntsperger do it? Why did I cry every time Jesus looked with love into the eyes of Peter? Why did I rejoice and tremble for...

1.0 out of 5 stars Storytelling?
Apparently, the author forgot this was supposed to be a story. He "told" instead of "showed" Jesus love. It appeared as though Peter was from the 21st century and gone back in time to tell us how our opinions of Jesus are wrong. I don't think that Peter thought in terms and concepts of the 21st century, but in terms of the 1st century. The entire...

Why did I rejoice and tremble for every step Peter took toward understanding his Master better? Why was I able to experience the love of Christ like never before? Why, for the first time in my life, am I buying a bundle of books to pass out to my friends who want to walk closer to the Master? I feel like an author finally did justice to my impression of the biblical Jesus. This is an exceptional write by a master storyteller who is bound by passion to stay true to the Word!

5.0 out of 5 stars He's got it!!, January 27, 2003
This review is from: The Fisherman: A Novel (Paperback)
Sometimes I wince when someone asks me to read a novel based on a Biblical character. I winced when I was given this one. No more. You are going to love this book! Not only that, you are also going to read the Biblical accounts of Peter and the words of Peter in the Bible with fresh insight and depth. This is a case when a "sanctified imagination" has become a gift to Christians who love Peter and, even more, love the One he followed and worshiped.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss reading this one!!, January 27, 2003

I found this book to be very moving!
It was a "tear jerker" for me! *~* I could hardly lay it down.
This book made me feel like I was actually there and experiencing the emotions as well as the actual events Peter, the main character, was describing. This book made the gospels "come alive" for me. I liked the way the author's time line of all the gospel events gave the story a smooth flow and the epilogue at the end was extraordinary!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who, for any reason at all, ever wished they could have lived during this time when Jesus actually lived and walked this earth with His disciples. It makes one feel like they were there. It makes you understand that the disciples were just ordinary folks like the rest of us.
What an "eye-opener", A wonderful read!!!

This book gives a glimpse at the Christ that I want to know more of. Christ as God incarnate, embodying unconditional love, yet encouraging righteousness. If you want to know more of the acceptance of Christ, this book will lead the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Fisherman, April 22, 2003

This review is from: The Fisherman: A Novel (Paperback)
This was a very moving story. The author put me back to the time Jesus walked our earth. I always knew Peter was a man but did not realize how much he was like myself. With my own agenda on how Jesus should work in my life. Even when he shows me the way in no uncertain terms, my flesh does the oposite.
I laughed, I cried, I walked next to my Master along with Peter. Larry seemed to let the Lord work through him in this book. He put his writing into a way I could relate to on a very personal level. The questions Peter asks are the same qustions I ask when I am being the most real with myself.
Some books leave you hungry for more of the Fathers truth, this is certainly one of those books. Thanks Larry for making me hungry again. It's been awhile! A must read for those[like me] who have problems with understanding the men who walked with the Master. They really were men like you and I. Larry is my new favorite author.

Larry has done a masterful job of telling The Greatest Story Ever Told in first person through the eyes and thoughts of The Fisherman. An historical novel written in a different way. Highly recommended for people who like historical novels and a must for all Christians.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Highly Recommend This Book !, July 22, 2003
This review is from: The Fisherman: A Novel (Paperback)
The first time I read this book, I read it to my children at bedtime. It's a delightful book to read aloud because of the excellent writing. It's not a book that the author expected children to read, but mine did enjoy it and hopefully learn a better view of an old story, as I did.

I'm picky about the way a true story is told, and I was not disappointed in this pastor's storytelling. I didn't find any worrisome bits of twisted Scripture in the retelling of a Bible story, as I have in other books. I loved the way this was told with the big picture in mind, the picture that I've so easily overlooked in church school lessons or even casual readings of the Scriptures. As a homeschooling mother, I'm pleased to have found a living book that shows the author's views of relationship with Jesus, and that helps me to think about how to steer some of our family reading as we continue our schooling.

I loved that I could read an account of a believer who was there, experiencing the stories in person, and who still didn't understand what was going on. Yes, it's fiction, but the truth is within the pages of this book, and I've read it several times already.

I'm looking forward to Larry's next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is so cool!, May 13, 2005
This review is from: The Fisherman: A Novel (Paperback)
Ok, I don't say this about too many, but this book is simply awesome!
Describes the ministry of Jesus through one of His closest disciples, Peter, the fisherman.
I've often wondered as I read the Bible how Peter felt when he did things like walk on the water or denied Christ. We always think of Peter as "The great Peter!", but he was as human as any of us and this book brings that out in an unforgetable drama. I wasn't able to put it down the first time I read it, and it's still holds a thrill for me.
Makes a great gift for all ages!

4.0 out of 5 stars Jesus, my best friend, August 24, 2004
By
This review is from: The Fisherman: A Novel (Paperback)
I bought this book for my brother, a pastor, and have found myself so moved by it that I'll have to get him his own copy. This one's mine! The book really reveals Jesus as a our best friend, our confidant and the one who knows best. In "The Fisherman," Peter frequently resorts to relying on his own instincts but learns that the Master not only has a better way, He has the only way. There's a passage in this book that says Peter knew Jesus as friend first and had to learn that he is Master and Messiah; but that we who know He is Messiah must learn that He's our friend. Beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peter the Rock, May 22, 2004

I loved the account of Simon the fisherman and his journey to become Peter the rock. For me, this first person account by Simon Peter allowed me to feel like I was there. I look forward to a visit with Peter when I get to heaven. Thank you to Mr. Huntsperger for writing this account.
