Book Description

June 25, 2005
Fishing Alaska's Kenai River is a definitive guide to angling the state's most popular sport fishery. Perhaps no other river in the world can present such profuse sport fishing opportunities coupled with easy access, affordable accommodations, and beautiful vistas. The Kenai is home to runs of fish that may in some years easily reach into the millions, trophy and record king salmon up to 90 pounds or more, and 38-inch native rainbow trout. This book focuses on the entire Kenai River drainage, the mainstem river as well as tributary streams and lakes, and all the game fish available. Hot spots along and within the river system are highlighted accompanied with detailed information on access, facilities, services, fish run timing, proven techniques, best lures and flies, and much, much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Resource for Fishing the Kenai River in Print, February 19, 2006

This review is from: Fishing Alaska's Kenai River: A Complete Angler's Guide to the Kenai River Drainage (Paperback)
I'm starting to see Gunnar Pedersen as an old fishing buddy. His other books, Highway Angler and Alaska Fishing with Renee Limeres have become critical parts of my fishing library. This book is now standing right next to them (unless I have them down to plan my next trip.)

This is the best new Alaskan fishing book I have seen since his Alaska Fishing. It is definitely not as eye-catching as Alaska Fishing and not nearly as well illustrated, but you can't find another book on the market that covers the Kenai River better. Where the scope of his earlier projects has been overwhelming so that content is sketchy, this book takes a manageable area - the entire Kenai drainage - and covers it inside and out. He doesn't just cover the main King and Sockeye runs in the Kenai's main channel, but each run of each species in each tributary, and nearly then gives every access point to reach them.

The editing leaves something to be desired, there are lots of typos and inverted words (almost one a page) but the content is unbeatable. And in the end, that is what matters here. If you are scheduled or are planning to fish the Kenai, get this book.

There was a mention that this is the first book in a planned series of books to cover other watersheds. Let's hope so, I would like this book for every river I fish in Alaska.

Visiting the Kenai? This is your book. Got Gunnar's "Alaska Fishing" as well. Two must have books for anyone fishing in Alaska. He doesn't hold back like most authors of fishing books. He tells you everything you could want to know. Sure made my trips more successful. Awesome books full of detailed info.
