Just got into fishing with bucktails and picked this book up on a whim. First night out I catch a Striper using the techniques described in this book. Awesome! I am now hooked. Pick up this book, it is a winner.

If you, in any way, have an interest in learning the bucktail, BUY THIS BOOK! Everything you need to know is contained in these pages. Skinner takes you from surf to bay, boat to kayak and goes into detail of how you would approach each scenario with the bucktail to catch fish, discussing the hardware and set up to casting and retrieve techniques.

This is my first year learning to fish bucktails(2012). In preparation for the season I read this information packed and highly practical book by John Skinner. He covers jig and tackle basics, how to bucktail on sand beaches, inlets and jetties as well as bucktailing from boat or kayak. The book also covers how to make your own bucktails.

A couple of months into the season and I have caught 5 keeper bass 10 lbs. or bigger all on my own hand tied bucktail jigs. Thank you for lowering my learning curve Mr. Skinner!

I can't recommend this book enough if you are thinking about learning to fish bucktail jigs.

I found this book to be a solid introduction to bucktailing tactics and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning more about these classic lures. John Skinner's style is engaging and clear which makes it a lot of fun to read and very informative. Additionally, his videos on Youtube are a great extra and really do help to drive home the points that he's making in his book.

I do not live where I can pursue striped bass, bluefish or fluke which are the principle species covered in this book, so, while I found it very helpful overall I am still left with some specific questions related to the fish which I primarily fish for (trevally, snappers and groupers). I came to understand through this book that bucktailing is mainly about controlling a few variables in order to keep your lure in the strikezone for the species you are pursuing. I was expecting bucktailing to be more about jigging the lure and less about swimming the lure so that was a bit of a revelation for me. I am not yet sure how well my local species respond to swimming the lure but I know a great deal more about what it takes to keep the bucktail in the strike zone than I knew previously.

To sum it up, this is an excellent resource and is almost certainly a five star book if you live in the Northeastern United States and can try these tactics as written. For everyone else fishing bucktails in saltwater it is a very solid book which can help to introduce you to the subtleties and possibilities of these classic lures.

One of the best written books that I have ever read regarding salt water fishing. Wriiten in a scientific manner with all aspects of fishing with bucktails for striped bass and fluke covered in detail. I am 83 years old and have been a striper fisherman for over 75 years after catching my first in NY Bay near the Statue of Liberty. I recall that Upperman white bucktails were included in the fishing kits lifeboats were equipped with during WWII.I am also a fan of bucktails but have strayed away from using them since the popularity of plastics. The book stirred my interest and I have gone back to using bucktails the last few weeks and have done well with the stripers.
I look forward to more books by Mr. Skinner, hopefully one about fishing for southern species with these great lures.

The book was written in very easy to understand language for the most part. As a newbie saltwater fisherman I had to jot down much of what I read since the lures, rods, reels, line was a foreign language. Not a problem. I appreciated John's approach to analyzing the stalk. I am an engineer and he approached it in a very scientific manner. He went as far as to summarize Bucktail fishing is no an art but rather a science. I can see where he is coming from. I obviously will not be able to fish as many days per year as John so my learning will be a slow process. With that knowledge I plan to do the fishing log as he has done for so many years. This is a must read for anyone who wants to move from fishing to catching. Thanks
