The author, being that most unusual creature--an honest angler--offers this caveat on the opening page: "Many of us have elevated fly fishing (especially our favorite kind) to the highest category of human endeavor: something we don't need to explain unless we feel like it. Of course, if we do feel like explaining it, look out. We're liable to start referring to it as an 'art' and maybe even sit down and write a book or something." The rest you can guess. John Gierach is the author of At the Grave of the Unknown Fisherman (0-7432-2992-4), Death, Taxes, and Leaky Waders (0-684-86858-X), and Good Flies (1-58574-139-6), and he has written articles for Fly Rod & Reel, Gray's Sporting Journal, and Field & Stream. He lives in the high-country state of Colorado.

John Gierach is the author of several previous books, including At the Grave of the Unknown Fisherman, Standing in a River Waving a Stick, and Dances with Trout. His work has appeared in Gray's Sporting Journal, Field & Stream, where he is a contributing writer, and Fly Rod & Reel, where he is a columnist. He also writes columns for the Longmont (CO) Daily Times-Call and the monthly Redstone Review. He lives in Lyons, Colorado.

All I do is fish small streams and this book rules.Anyone who doesn't think so isn't really a small stream person, but someone posing as a fly fisherman while it's a fad.I've been fishing small streams since I could walk and he has hit the heart of the subject perfectly.The book is perfectly balanced with humor,good stories and tons of practical and accurate advice-this is by far his best book-and the best book on the subject-PERIOD!BUY IT!!!!

Gierach gives a nut & bolts guide to flyfishing small water. While he doesn't spend much time spinning fishing tales, he does offer an extensive discussion of how he fly fishes - offering insight into the skills that he's built up on all those adventures he's told of in some of his more recent books

Gierach is very good at describing the mindset of fishing, and this book is a very good example. There is technical information and practical advice, to be sure, but the most valuable parts of the book are the descriptions of how to think, act, and feel about approach fish on a small stream. And of course, Gierach is a very entertaining writer.
