Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2?Every summer, a boy and his mother visit his three uncles at their village on the Atlantic, where they fish for their living. The child wants very much to go with them but his mother thinks he is too young. Finally, at age eight, he becomes a part of the crew. Unable to sleep one night, he climbs on the boat and when he wakes up he is at sea. He happily works alongside his uncles until he accidentally falls overboard, but he proves himself capable of joining the crew by swimming back to the boat, climbing aboard, and taking responsibility for his mishap. Mom relents and lets him join the crew because she decides to go along, too. By summer's end, he has grown strong and competent as a young fisherman. He never loses the memory of the tastes of that summer?bitter and raw and sweet like the men's coffee. Now he is an adult looking back. The fish are gone and everyone has gone on to other things; only the memories remain. The acrylic paintings are full of action. One can see the wind blow, the waves roll, and the gulls fly as the family goes about their work and play. Two engaging illustrations show what's happening above and below the water?fishing lines going from the boat to the ocean bottom, and the boy swimming toward the boat. A memorable story of one boy's summer adventure against the backdrop of a time gone by.?Virginia Golodetz, St. Michael's College, Winooski, VT
