Fishing Tackle Antiques and Collectibles, Vol. 2, October 18, 2005
This review is from: Fishing Tackle Antiques & Collectibles: Reels, Spoons & Spinners, Hooks & Harnesses, Vol. 2 (Hardcover)
This is one of the few antique reel books that has extensive decent photos of collector reels and lures. The book is composed of about 1/3 lures and 2/3 reels. It would have been better to be either all lures. or all reels - since most of us collect one or the other. I collect reels, so my comments will only be for the reel section.
Unfortunately, the photo angles are inadequate for the reels. Most serious collectors want to see the face plate, the tail plate and the bottom of the reel. All three photos are required to properly identify many reels. Mr. White does not show the bottom of any reels - so you can't see the reel foot design or the foot bridge clearly - a major draw back. Though there are lots of photos, further disappointments await the buyer when he finds that many significant reel models from manufacturers are not shown or listed incorrectly - i.e. the Thomas Chubb Black Bass Reel. (Later found this reel listed under Henshall and Antwerp - which is the model crediting two people who helped Chubb with the design, not the manufacturer - which was Thomas Chubb.)
He also includes about 250 unknown reels - one assumes because it makes us feel better that he didn't identify those reels either. However, I note that quite a few of his unknown reels are identified by other authors in their books.
Mr. White also places values on the reels. Those values may reflect high end auction house prices, but they are more than twice or three times the prices seen on EBay every day for similar reels of excellent condition. Another draw back is Mr. Whites prices are for reels of "Excellent Condition." Since very few reels of "Excellent Condition" are ever seen - it further reduces value of Mr. White's evaluations. Even Mr. Whites says there could be %50 flucuation. I personally find Lawsson's Price Guide to be far closer to reality and its based on Lang's Auctions and give reels a numerical condition rating that you can compare to the value it was actually sold at. Unfortunately, Lawson's does not include any pictures, so it is limited help indentification wise.
In summary, a book with lots of reel and photos that may be some help with reel identification - if you have a marked reel. A cross referenced index by model, type, mfg. and key manufacture signature characteristics would have made the book a lot more helpful. In all fairness to Mr. White - no such book exists. This book has limited photo information, and no other information on reel identification characteristics or mfg. history. The photos were a good start - but it could have been so much more.
