Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Hauser has shown skill in presenting accurate and succinct information about marine species. In his latest work, which deals with fish most commonly seen by divers, Hauser presents not only some of the most colorful fish, but also gives examples from major fish families. Included also are excellent photographs, each accompanied by specifications for each shot, generalized range maps for some species, and brief, easy-to-follow descriptions of each fish. In Mills's book, designed for the beginning aquarist, information on the most common aquarium fishes is presented. The book's first half covers the nuts-and-bolts of getting startede.g., how to handle the tank, water, heating and lighting and how to select the fish. The section on breeding is particularly important because it explains how techniques for collecting live aquarium fish cause serious habitat destruction in some reefs. The section on more than 50 species suitable for the home aquarium is accurate, although not extremely detailed. Good quality color photographs accompany the brief descriptions of each fish. Zupanc presents well-written and accurate information on some aspects of fish behavior. His is not a comprehensive work but instead offers a "selected readings" approach. (Some areas of behavior such as feeding and breeding, including courtship and nesting, are largely neglected.) In addition to his own expertise, Zupanc draws on information from other fish behavior experts through interviews and published literature. Zupanc's book is useful to anyone interested in fish, particularly students and educators; Mills's makes a good primer for beginners in home aquariums; and Hauser's is an excellent choice for public and school libraries. 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Handy Guide, May 14, 2000
This review is from: A Fishkeeper's Guide to Marine Fishes (Hardcover)
I was extremely pleased by this book...another runaway sucess and a great helping hand for beginners as well as experts in this field. I started with Dick Mills when I was a kid. Now, my hobby has grown to 40 tanks...and Dick Mills uses his fluent and simple language...excellent pictures..as well as frank and to the point information, helpful and informative pictures as well as diagrams to Illustrate this challenging hobby or Marine fish keeping. I find it a very helpful guide...unlike other guides which give a host of useless pictures and information. It is a must companion in ur library if u want to see keep ur aquarium in good condition as well as have a simple yet in depth knowledge of the dos and donts of this hobby . Ill recommend it to beginners as well as hobbyists.Especially uselful are the topics on diseases and their treatment, quarantine, aquarium set up. Even the individual profile of fish..their compatibility, and feeding habit, are very useful. I am buying more copies to gift them to fellow aquarists. Hope u enjoy this book as i have, my email is prateepks@yahoo.com, you are free to contact me for anyhelp .
