Review

"Fishless Days, Angling Nights is a compound of sage judgment, warm memory, and dry wit."--Arnold Gingrich

From the Back Cover

Fishless Days, Angling Nights is a rich and varied treasury of superb stories and articles by the acknowledged "Dean of American Fly Fishermen." It memorably records the perils and rewards, the delights and disappointments of a lifetime of sporting days and nights on the stream. There is lighthearted philosophy and profound insight into the character of fishermen and campers. There are hilarious pieces and starkly vivid recollections of the terrors of night fishing. Famous fly-fishing stories are here, along with warm memories of chance meetings along the stream and moving reminiscences of such famed anglers as Edward R. Hewitt and George M.L. LaBranche and there are practical and provocative articles. Fishless Days, Angling Nights is a book not only for angling enthusiasts but for anyone interested in the very finest writing about the outdoors. (6 x 9, 224 pages, b&w photos)

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is truely worth it., December 27, 2011

Neversink Fly Fisherman "Matthew R. Beers" (On The Neversink when trout are rising!) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fishless Days, Angling Nights (Paperback)
I am an avid angler, living in the area most of the stories in this book take place. The Neversink River that is referenced many times in Alfred Miller's writing is my home water. I have a large library of fly fishing books and have many of the the great titles avalible at will, but this book.......... is ablsolutly briliant. I've read it many times cover to cover. The stories (which are divided into chapters) have a flow you normally don't find in fishing books. Everything from somber tones to comical laugh out loud funny is touched on in the different stories he tells. I don't know what else to say other then, for the price of this book don't be without a copy.

"although fish do make a difference in angling, catching them does not; so that one who is content to not-catch fish in the most skillful and refined manner, utilizing the best equipment and technique, will have their time and attention free for the accumulation of a thousand experiences, which will remain for their enjoyment long after any recollection of fish would have faded."
