Fishman Rare Earth Blend Pickup

An improved microphone and re-voiced electronics offer a warmer, more natural acoustic tone. Easily accessible Mic/Pickup Blend Control offers fingertip control to dial in just the right blend. Cutting-edge neodymium magnets provide excellent string-to-string balance while the pickup’s active electronics and low-noise, discrete circuitry design keep the sound pure and clean with smooth response throughout the frequency range.

This is the best acoustic pickup/mic I have ever used, in 20 years of using electronics. I have used soundhole pickups, under-saddle pickups (which I hate as they never sound like a real guitar). Previously I was using an internal gooseneck condenser mic with adequate results, but found the sound a bit thin when i used effects. Using a Taylor 510, in a huge church through a mixer into the PA system. Switching to the Fishman was like night and day; was able to dial a blend easily to give my sound some nice full bottom without sacrificing treble. I also found that when i used effects, dialing to the magnetic pickup gave better results. A previous reviewer complained about the mic position; I find it is in an optimal position and have not felt the need to move it; in fact my old gooseneck was annoying because it would eventually drift into a position that was either too much bass or too much treble. I have never felt the need to move the Fishman mic at all.
I decided to retire my Taylor, and have now moved and play in a Church about one fifth the size of the other. I now use an Epiphone Masterbilt 500 (all solid wood, mahogany and spruce), and the pickup continues to be stunning. As I said I much prefer this to an undersaddle piezo; undersaddle combos just seem to "boingy" or "twangy" and less natural to me; with the Fishman blend, I get plenty of bottom from the magnetic pickup without sacrificing a realistic, woody tone.

Addendum: Though I referenced this in my review, the other great feature here is that it can be moved from guitar to guitar with little effort..just loosening the strings to reach in and removed the endpin jack. It's also nice not to have to alter a good guitar.

Addendum: Just bought a new Taylor Guitar with the ES system.

I have been playing electro-acoustic and acoustic steel string guitars for nearly 20 years. I am also a sound engineer and a producer, and am extremely critical about sound overall, specifically critical about acoustic instrument's sound. I have found that most acoustic guitars with pickups sound terribly artificial, so the past 2 guitars I have bought have been Martins with no pickups. About a year ago I began playing in a band and needed to amplify my steel string, so after researching a bit I decided on this pickup. I was especially drawn by this pickup's ability to blend both a mic and a magnetic pick up. It brings out the best of my instrument. I like to set the knob to halfway between both, which gives me a very natural, beautiful sound. When feedback becomes an issue with the mic, I simply turn the knob to magnetic pick up, and still the guitar sounds beautiful.
The goose neck does move out of place, but only when moving the guitar from place to place. I haven't found this to be an issue.
I highly recommend this pick up.

4 stars for the moment, as I haven't had the opportunity to use it in different situations yet. Easy to install, both the sounds from the humbucker and from the mic are convincing. A good opportunity to avoid drilling my Southern Jumbo and to avoid the piezo sound.

I mounted it on my son acoustic jumbo guitar. It has been easy.
He chose to have it with stereo output, separating both pickups, magnetic and choose neck condenser Mic. that is well described on the fisherman web site, simple soldering.
Good surprise, when plugged in mono, the internal mixer still works.
Sound is great, it respects the original guitar sound.
