I have had nothing but trouble with this item.

I was only trying to cut a 4" circle and this cutter with brand new blades just kept tearing up all my paper (plain paper, cardstock, everything).

This will cut clean shapes, just not consistently.

I agree with one of the other reviewers, using this product DOES take practice (as with ANY manual shape cutting product), but once you get the hang of it its a breeze! (I did the same thing at first, put the template upsidedown even after reading which way was right!). I used the creative memories circles, ovals, star, and other shapes owned by a friend of mine at a recent scrapbooking event and found them to be just about the same - only difference being that theirs has a built in guide on the cutting tool itself, which I found to be annoying when the blade DIDN't routate like it was supposed to and it ripped my paper or picture to shreds. With the Fiskars, its a lot harder to shred something - although still possible of course. Really, either product is good once you practice enough to know that you have to GO SLOW. I bought a whole Fiskar set with templates for 60% at a big sale and love them.

I strongly disagree with the other 2 reviews. I think I know where their problems happened...b/c it happened to me! First off, you have to buy the Fiskars templates. I have heard others will not work well, if at all. Secondly, you have to lay the Fiskars templates facing down (where you can read the word "Fiskars") They are a one side use. If you accidentally flip it over (like I did) then yes, you will have problems like the other reviewers mentioned with jagged lines, etc.! Just make sure you have the template facing the correct way and it will give you perfect cuts everytime. It is a PRO on curves if used properly. Also, the blade adjusts according to your needs. If it is thick paper, you rotate the dial all the way left. If you have thin paper, rotate dial all the way right. If medium, rotate in the center position. This little tool is a must have in my book. I wish I had purchased this years ago!

I have to emphatically disagree with the other reviewer on this item. I have had nothing but trouble with this item. I was able to install the blade in the item with little difficulty, but the moment that tried to cut it was a nightmare. My paper had this horrible jagged cut. I then read that the blade has to be pointing in a certain direction for it to cut properly - no problem I moved the blade and tried again... everything was fine as long as I cut a straight line - when you try the curves the blade doesn't shift properly and you end up with jagged cuts again. I even went on the fiskars website and watched their how to video. I was doing everything right and it still doesn't work properly. I am returning my templates and buying the Creative Memories cutting system which gives a perfect cut every time - a little more pricey - but I won't be ruining expensive paper anymore. Good Luck!

I tried this out at a scrapbooking meetup and really liked it. Yeah, it does take some practice to cut correctly. Going around sharp curves is the hardest part, you have to go REALLY slow. And always, always, make sure you have the template facing the right side up or it won't work at all (cuts jagged or not at all if the template is facing the wrong side up). I've used this for photos (you can make the cutest albums this way!) and frames, and even just embellishments! Using the star shape you can make really cute flowers. This product is probably not as great as a fancy die cut machine like the cricut, but it works well and costs a whole lot less!

I have tried endless times to cut out a circle using this with a Fiskars template and have had no luck. I bought it for the sole purpose of cutting out 1 inch circles that I needed for a project. Every time I cut a circle it would have a jagged, uneven edge. When I looked on the website for help, Fiskars suggested that you start the blade on an even edge, not a curve or corner. How are you supposed to not start on a curve when cutting a circle!? Very irritating. I found a rotating circle cutter that works much better.

I'm like a bulldog. Common sense tells me that an item probably won't work well. People review it online and the takeaway is that I should try something else. But....no, I have to try the thing anyway. The Ultra ShapeXpress was another example of how my bulldogedness gets me into trouble.

This cutter works, but it's about as persnickety as any ridiculous tool I've ever used. You have to have the blade facing the right direction at all times while you're cutting and you have to have the blade at pretty much the precise cutting level to cut whatever thickness of paper you're cutting. If you get lucky, you can get an almost clean cut. But it takes work, it takes patience and it takes the luck that the blade won't turn around as your rounding a corner and tear your paper instead of cutting it. I attempted to use it with a rectangular Fiskars template. Don't do that. It does not draw straight lines consistently.

So.. for me, this is a distress cutter. If you're looking for a distress effect, this cutter might actually help you, because it slices well at times, and at times it mangles leaving a nice random "tattered" look while maintaining some semblance of whatever shape you're attempting.. It is also rather fun for making freehand cuts, so if you want to create something like a tree of life foreground with other papers peeking thru the background, it might be nice for that if you don't mind having some tattered places.. It also might be nice for drawing a scored drawing in cardstock. Then if you paint the cardstock, the paint will soak through more in the scored lines, creating an interesting effect.

It's a tool that has a creative purpose, which is why I gave it two, rather than one star.
