Customer Reviews

This is a very good, very sturdy cutting mat in a very good size.

I'd used the old mat quite extensively and hadn't noticed any wear so I'm excited to see how this one holds up!
Stephanie
It is very easy to cut on and the lines are so easy to find with the two sides light and dark.

I received this mat yesterday and when I took a close look at it, noticed the sticker saying "This product contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects, and/or reproductive harm". I have no idea what they're referring to, and as the other reviewer stated, the mat has a really strong rubbery/chemical smell. The smell alone turns me off.

***I came back to edit my review. I called the company and asked them about the sticker, and they explained that the sticker was added to ALL Fiskars products once Prop 65 passed in CA. Until they were able to chemically analyze all of their products, the sticker was introduced to comply with the proposition, in case they were to find any carcinogenic components in their products. They assured me that all of their products passed the necessary tests and were found to have NO carcinogenic materials in them, and that many products being sold today still have that sticker on them. I can't verify their statements, but the customer service representative said that it is a common question and that Fiskars realizes the concern the stickers can cause.

So I've been using my mat, and I love it. It's great - and the rubbery smell went away in a day or so once it was placed on a table.

This is my new favorite thing for crafting! The board is much thinner then I expected but works so well! I've been using it for a few months now and there is no evidence of scratches or marks from my rotary cutter or scissors!

This cutting mat is one of the best I have used. It does have a smell but that will dissipate with time I did not have any issues with the product it self. The one issue I did have was that is was shipped rolled up. That meant that I had to lay it out in the sun to warm and flatten. I can't tell you how annoying this was. After I received it I happened to look at my local Wal-mart and for the same price I could have bought one that was flat. It only took two days for it to flatten back out but Amazon really needs to learn not to bend these when shipping.

I had several of these cutting boards over the past few years. They wore out VERY quickly and if you read the fine print you find out why... they state they are for "rotary cutters only". Using craft knives on them destroys them in short order.

Not so with the Alvin boards. MUCH, MUCH better quality and so much more durable you will not believe the difference. You will go through a dozen Fiskars boards before needing to replace the Alvin, it is that large a difference when using craft knives.

As I write this, I don't yet know if I will have to return this product. It might be damaged to the point of not being usable but the fault is not with the product itself. The problem is with Amazon and their choice of how to ship the mats.

I have been quilting for almost 30 years and have used every kind of rotary cutting mat - including Fiskars mats - and one of the first things you learn is how quickly and easily these mats can warp - usually with permanent results. So when I ordered two (2) of the 24" x 36" mats from Amazon, I expected the mats to be shipped in a large, flat, thin box. Instead, Amazon chose to fold the mat in half and ship it in a box measuring 24" x 16" x 8". That was irresponsible given the nature of the product.

To compound the problem, did I mention that I live in Phoenix, Arizona and the mat was purchased and shipped in August? Couldn't Amazon foresee that might be a problem? The product is such that shipping the mats in such a manner is equally problematic for mats shipped to northern Michigan in the dead of winter. Call me crazy but I expected Amazon to have enough product knowledge to know how best to ship the products they sell.

Since the mats were still very warm and somewhat pliable when I removed them from the boxes - yes, boxes... Amazon chose to ship the mats separately - I am cautiously optimistic that they might be flat again after laying on a flat table with other mats on top of it. If that doesn't happen, the mats will be returned and I will purchase these mats elsewhere.

Just so you know, the mats do have an odor to them that is customary to any new rotary cutting mat. It is already disappearing. Let's hope the rather dramatic curve does too.

I have small cutting mats, and they have worked great for my smaller projects.
As I have decided to jump into the world of art quilting, I needed a bigger mat.

There are no places where I live (The Boonies) which sell sewing supplies beyond a basic pack of
needle and cheap 50-cent threads, so I went to my favorite place to shop (Amazon) to look for a decent, yet
affordable mat.

There were several mats that had the dimensions I needed (one direction had to be at least 24"), but my
budget was very limited this time. So, I was looking for decent without breaking the bank.

I have to say that I was very disappointed indeed.
I have cut three binding strips that were two feet long each, so six feet of fabric,
and trimmed the edges of my art quilt. That's all. I have four or five black lines
(my fabric was black cotton) on the mat permanently now!

I cannot brush them off, and they did not wash off. I had a new blade, so it wasn't an old
blade digging a rut. And a self-healing mat should be self-healing anyway!!
Not that it should matter, but my cutter is also a Fiskars: Fiskars 9521 45mm Contour Rotary Cutter.

I am really disappointed by this purchase. I needed one desperately, and it kept me from cutting
the table, so I won't be sending it back. But good grief - permanently "scarred" after ONE project that
wasn't even a lot of cutting?? I'll post a few photos. I see other reviews don't mention this. I wonder
if I got a bad mat?
Also, mine came shipped relatively flat in a large box, so I guess Amazon has changed the shipping methods
and no longer rolls the mats.
