5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite garden tool
This is the first tool I reach for in almost any gardening situation. Weeding, freeing bound roots, cutting sod... everything. It's sturdy, the grip is very comfortable, and the applications are almost limitless. If you only buy one gardening tool, this should be it.

1.0 out of 5 stars It is not that good Not full tang in handle
I like to garden I usually like Fiskars equipment This one is a BIG DISSAPOINTMENT. While digging weeds the handle bent. Under the rubber handle is a thin piece of steel that looks like a wire it maybe has a 1/8 inch diameter. The handle is very cheaply reinforced. Not a full piece of steel of a heavy cylinder welded to the hilt. Just a cheap piece of steel that...

The first time I tried to use this tool with any force, it snapped in half. I'll be returning it for a refund and applying the credit to a solid steel tang hori-hori, like I should have gotten in the first place.

On the second pass into the ground to remove a weed the kinfe broke apart at the spot weld which was three tiny welds made to hold the knife blade to the handle. Very poor construction. Only Fiskars tool I've ever had that failed on initial use.Fiskars Big Grip Garden Knife #7079

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality knife, July 15, 2008

I purchased the Fiskars Big Grip Garden Knife through Amazon. It broke the first time I used it. The blade is welded to the handle and the weld broke. The tool was useless after 30 seconds of work. Apparently, it is not a very well made tool. I normally like Fiskars products but this one need a little more design work. I like this type of tool for weeding and garden use and there are several on the market which are better made.

I love the feel of my Fiskars' garden knife. But after only a little while of use, the handle came loose from the blade. I wrote Fiskars' customer service, and they responded promptly with a new product. I use it all the time. I'd change the stars to 5 if they'd let me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Another bonehead item from the " we didn't learn our lesson from the auto manufacturers , yet !, April 1, 2010

This review is from: Fiskars 7079 Big Grip Garden Knife (Lawn & Patio)
I was raised in a family who had farming- type roots on my Mom's side. I loved to play around with all my grandfather's tools- all American made, and indestructable ! Tractor parts over the hill still were used for decades as lawn ornaments ! My point is, that people did not mind paying good money for well- designed tools that didn't just look good on an engineer's laptop, but were well made as well.

This tool from Fiskar's fits the bill on the first part- it is well designed, ergonomic, and colorful- just the thing that appeals to broad demographic that I'm sure this tool was meant to target.

But Fiskars, you need to hear this -" Shame on you " ! This goes for all of the other tool companies, auto makers, electronics manufacturers, etc that need to hear this message - We, the middle class working folk are sick and tired of this crap! Most people who work , know that whether you work as an artist, carpenter, chef, or any other profession ( like all of them ) that require tools, that " you are only as good as your tools quality " !!!!

Most people do not want the Chinese crap, or this tool from Fiskars, ( who usually puts out a good product ). Anyone with half a brain who knows bladed tools, knows that you need a full tang !!! ,, how much more would it have been to add the like 2 inches of 1/4 " tool steel through the handle ,, like 3 cents more ? !

Jesus , people, I'm sorry to ramble, but we need to stop accepting this crap; and start demanding tools that are the quality our forefathers and mothers would have been proud to use. JMHO

Have a great day !

2.0 out of 5 stars Some nice features, but for LIGHT use only, July 13, 2009
This review is from: Fiskars 7079 Big Grip Garden Knife (Lawn & Patio)
This is a fine tool for very light use. Unfortunately, most of the tasks you use a garden knife for are anything but light duty. After losing my many-years old hori hori knife, I thought I'd try this, mainly due to the price. On the plus side, the grip is comfortable, and the notched point is a nice feature. However, the build quality is not at all suitable to the things I want to use a garden knife for, such as prying out major weeds, dislodging rocks, sawing small roots, and dividing dense perennial clumps, etc. The blade is very thin and it is not securely attached to the handle. Returned it and went for a more sturdy knife (AM Leonard brand) that works much better (albeit at a higher cost). This knife would be fine for very light use in light soil. It won't survive anything else.

1.0 out of 5 stars Looks Cool, But Really Flimsy, June 4, 2009

I loved my gardening knife... for two days. I thought it looked like some kind of cool Klingon weapon from Star Trek. It did an amazing job of weeding, sawing small branches and hacking at weeds... for two days. I'd been leary about the spot welds that held it together, knowing that they can break. But, I thought, its made by Fiskars. Even though it cost a fraction of similar gardening knives, it must be good. On the second day of use, the handle snapped right off as I cut through a small handful of long grass. I could see right away that my fear of the spot welding on this tool had been well founded. I'd definitely recommend buying a more expensive knife. Don't worry, I plan to give my report to the Klingon High Command. No, seriously, don't waste your money on this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rotten tool, April 20, 2010
This review is from: Fiskars 7079 Big Grip Garden Knife (Lawn & Patio)
The only way I'd buy it again is if they made it sturdier. The grip was great, but fell apart after a few uses.
