Great Axe,
By El "Griton" (South Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fiskars 7854 X25 28-Inch Splitting Axe (Lawn & Patio)
After buying the Fiskars standard 2.5 lb splitter and 2.25 lb. chopping axes I decided to buy the heavier 4.5 lb maul (Power Axe 7854) for the harder oak wood and I was not disappointed. I also got the Fiskars sharpening tool (10 dollars) and it works great with all of the Fiskars axes.
One possible problem for some people: The handle could have been about 3 to 4 inches longer on the Power Axe but if one uses good form it works great as a medium weight maul. As with swinging ANY sharp tool good form and some common sense are a must to avoid injury. These axes are sharp from the factory but they will not shave hair until you use the sharpener. A few passes with the sharpener and these axes will shave your arm or anything else you want to. The design of the blade and the teflon coating on it prevents the axe from sticking to the wood. If it fails to split in the first swing just pull it out and take another swing. The light handle keeps the weight up front where it belongs. Also don't forget to lightly oil the blades when done or they will rust in a humid environment. After slicing my finger oiling the camp axe I spray WD-40 on them now. My old cheap wood handled axe was not very sharp and it kept sticking to the wood so bad that I sometimes needed to hammer it out. Once the handle started to come loose I just gave the thing away I bought the 14 inch camp axe (20 dollars at Home Depot) but it's too light for all but the smallest chores. Probably will be called on to help butcher deer and wild hogs. PRO: Great handling, good looking, really sharp tough blades, your gonna love it. CON: Short handle: watch your form or you will be taking off some toes or worse.

great wood splitter for women,
By A Customer
This review is from: Fiskars 7854 X25 28-Inch Splitting Axe (Lawn & Patio)
I have been splitting wood for a number of years and it is hard work for a woman. Recently, a friend let me borrow his power axe by Fiskars. It is a wonderful tool. I can split twice the wood with less effort than when I use a traditional wood splitter. The price is right since a heavy wood handled splitter costs $25 to $40, and often the wooden handles crack and break after a season or two. 5 stars, plus for this tool.

I bought this axe for my husband for Christmas. He has split many a log over the years and this is by far the best axe he has ever used. He said it split the logs like a knife through butter! He also said it was extremely light weight and comfortable to use.

Greatest Axe ever,

I'm cut my share of wood over the last 30 years. I split 60 plus cords a year. This axe is really nice. Light weight and easy to swing. The shape of head keeps it from getting stuck in even the wettest of wood. Great product. I liked it so much I bought the entire series.
Carefull these things are sharp!

Best Axe I've Ever Used,
By
This review is from: Fiskars 7854 X25 28-Inch Splitting Axe (Lawn & Patio)
I have had this axe for 2 years now, it's never been sharpened, and it still cuts better than any other axe i've ever used. I have used it for chopping and splitting, and it's great for both. When chopping, each swing drives deeper than I expect. And splitting with this axe is almost fun. I looked at a Gerber axe that looked like this one, but the Gerber was not as heavy - the Fiskars seemed much bigger and better.
I have had three friends come to Amazon and purchase this axe after borrowing mine - how's that for testimony? I even bought a second one just in case they discontinue making it...

This is a pretty nice axe. I have only used it for splitting, as it seems a bit heavy for chopping. The build quality of this thing is excellent. It is much better than the average Chinese made piece of junk. It's a shame that if you want good build quality at a somewhat reasonable price you need to buy a Finnish made product like this. You would think that an American company could make a comparable product, but I couldn't find one. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I think the handle is a bit short. I'm 5'10" and I wish it was about 4-6" longer. Other than that, it's great. Buy it!

Best Splitting Axe I have ever used, hands down,

I live on a small wooded property and have a wood burning stove that heats our house in the winter. The wood I burn in that stove I cut down and section with by echo chainsaw, and split with my Fiskars Axe. That is just to say I have plenty of experience using it. I also have years of experience using the "old style" heavy maul style splitters you see at the home improvement stores. If you are thinking about splitting wood, do NOT buy one of those heavy clunkers. In fact, stop thinking about it at all and buy this Fiskars axe. I'm serious, it is the bomb.
As further evidence, I recently had some friends help me haul and split a cord of wood on my property. We took turns on different duties, including the splitting. Their reactions from using my splitter? "wow", "Like a hot knife through butter." Can you tell I love this splitter? :-)

Very good,

This axe/splitter is a very good item. The handle is shorter than I would like and when switching from a traditional maul it is very noticeable. The axe is made from good materials, the handle is strong and smooth, the axe head metal holds a very fine edge but it does nick very easily. I was amazed at how easily it split wood on the first swing. There are a few drawbacks, using this to strike a splitting wedge is not as effective as a heavier maul. Not only due to the lighter weight but the metal is not as soft as a traditional maul. Also, the handle is shorter than I would prefer. This being said, I am still pleased with my purchase.

Best splitting axe I've ever owned....,

With a keen edge, this axe splits billets like a hot knife through butter. I recently helped a friend split two cords of seasoned pine and Russian olive wood. After letting him try the Fiskars I had a time trying to get it back from him. He's buying one also. Do yourself a favor and get the Fiskars axe sharpener. It's around ten dollars and puts a very sharp edge on your blade almost without effort... well worth the few dollars.

Great, but only if you're not tall,
By Phil N. Tropic "sound mind" (Vermont, USA) - See all my reviews

This and the companion chopping axe are great tools. The splitting effort with this is much less than with a convetional splitting maul. Quality and workmanship are excellent.
Two issues: 1) The handle is short. If you're over 5'4", this is a one-handed toy. If you're 5'4" or less, this is perfect (unless you want an excuse not to split wood). My wife absolutely loves it. Did I mention that the handle is short? 2) The nonstick surface treatment makes it unsuited for close work - making kindling out of a single log by hitting the log and axe together on the floor. When you do this, the log often slides off the head and jumps inwards, hitting the hand holding the axe handle. Hard to describe, but this is not the tool for making kindling. In summary - very nice tool for general purpose splitting for less vertically enhanced folks. Too light for really large and knotty logs, but lots less effort for the bulk of the wood. Despite the short handle, doesn't make a good hatchet for tall people. |
