5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome hatchet
I've been using this hatchet for 6 months now in the Estonian countryside. I camp and hike a lot and the hatchet has so far passed everything I've thrown at it (or rather thrown it at?). With a little strategy and pre-thinking of your split, I've successfully used it to even split logs. A great tool and with the size it's hard to beat. I use a 2-sided sharpening stone on...

3.0 out of 5 stars Fiskar's Backpack Hatchet
Bought this hatchet instead of the Gerber Backpaxe because it was a little cheaper. Ended up having to order a sheath cover to replace the hard plastic carrier it comes with instead of a sheath. The plastic carrier is NOT backpack friendly. So the final cost ended up being just as much as its Gerber counterpart. The hatchet itself is well-made and will suit my needs...

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome hatchet, August 5, 2011
This review is from: Fiskars 7855 8-Inch Hatchet (Lawn & Patio)
I've been using this hatchet for 6 months now in the Estonian countryside. I camp and hike a lot and the hatchet has so far passed everything I've thrown at it (or rather thrown it at?). With a little strategy and pre-thinking of your split, I've successfully used it to even split logs. A great tool and with the size it's hard to beat. I use a 2-sided sharpening stone on it regularly so it stays super sharp. But it takes of the coating. I haven't seen any decline in performance from the hatchet because of it though. If anything the stone works more to keep the sharp blade sharp.

If anything, buy the one with the nylon cover. It's much better than the plastic one. I saw both in the shop and am so glad I bought the nylon one.

Fiskars wood-splitting implements can't be beat. We have the axe and hatchet and they are the best we have ever owned --- and, with 5 fireplaces, chopping wood efficiently is important.

I own a few Fiskars axes. This hatchet is excellent! Well balanced and keeps it's edge.Very durable handle.I suspect it would last a million years in a landfill..Nice nylon sheath included. This is the perfect small hatchet for preparing kindling.Hot knife through butter..Easy to control.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a nice tool, August 2, 2011

I bought this just as the name implies to fit in my backpack, bug-out-bag, etc. Its great for what it is intended for: a light weight little chopper. It needs to be used as such. Sure, it can be pressed to do more but it will probably fall short of a more appropriately sized hatchet or axe in doing the task. It is well built, feels solid, and has a coated head for rust protection. I got mine for $20 and some change on Amazon. Its not that sharp out of the box, and I have yet to put a better edge on it (just arrived yesterday), so that has yet to be seen how well it sharpens. I wont even comment on those that do not know how to sharpen a knife, hatchet, axe or other cutting/chopping tool. I did go out to the firewood pile and split a few 3 and 4 inch diameter logs into kindling, and it performed well. I have never had a hatchet this short before but it didn't take long to get used to it. It's carrying case isn't the best designed since its billed as a backpack tool, but it can be further secured from coming off inside of your backpack easily enough with something wrap/tied around it: rubber bands, twine, old inner tube, etc. The case is rather bulky though. A sheath, like Gerber's, would have been a better all around solution. It could then be worn at the waist, carried inside your pack, or other wise connected to your gear via the top loop on the sheath as well. If you can find a replacement sheath for any of the Gerber hatchets, it should fit. The picture on Amazon shows an all black handle (at least under the department that i ordered it from) but the one I received had an orange colored section at the bottom of the handle, which I actually like better. I just wish Amazon either fixed their pictures, or provide options with a drop down menu as to which one you want. They do this with other items. I like to know what I am getting, not all surprises are pleasant ones, in that aspect. Anyway, if you use it as intended, you'd be hard pressed to find anything wrong with it.

Would've given 5 stars but for the lack of a sheath.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little Hatchet, June 21, 2011
This review is from: Fiskars 7855 8-Inch Hatchet (Lawn & Patio)
Nice design, very sharp, I use it to cut the sprouts off of the Maple trees and remove part of tree roots so i don't hit them with a lawn mower ... very little effort required because the hatchet is very sharp...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Back-Pack hatchet, December 18, 2009
This review is from: Fiskars 7855 8-Inch Hatchet (Lawn & Patio)
This is a very compact, yet extremely well built hatchet. With proper care the high-grade, rust-resistant steel head and strong composite handle should last a lifetime. The common criticism with this hatchet an others of similar size, is that it is too small to be used effectively to split logs and chop up firewood--and this is true, but its a backpack hatchet, not an axe. It works great for chopping fish or game, or for cutting kindling, and it doubles as a tent stake hammer. Have realistic expectations about the size of the hatchet and its intended use.

It comes with a nice plastic holder and carrying handle, but the carrying handle is overly long; some people have criticized the length. I chose to cut-off the unnecessary hand-hold part of the top of the carrying handle with a pair of tin snips and smoothed the edges with sandpaper. Now its more compact and is still just as effective as a hatchet head protector.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tiny Yet Impressive, November 2, 2011

This review is from: Fiskars 7855 8-Inch Hatchet (Lawn & Patio)
I received the Fiskars 7855 8" Hatchet earlier today and, after conducting a cursory initial inspection, must say that I was quite pleased with it. After closer inspection about an hour later, I found nothing whatsoever to diminish my initial pleasure. The hatchet is lightweight, sharp-out-of-the-box, and has exceptional ergonomics. Being a Fiskars product, I expected quality. I wasn't disappointed!

The hatchet feels solid in either hand, appears well built, and when I tested it on some old but thick olive branches that are scattered about part of my property, the coated steel blade easily cut right through them all.

I was initially a little concerned about the FiberComp handle's hollow vibration-absorbing chamber, thinking it might be a Fiskars cost saver that would translate negatively into a lot of unnecesary hand and forearm discomfort after prolonged use. The verdict is still out on that, but I cannot realistically envision my ever needing to use this little gem for anything more than light duty; you know, like when a bushcraft knife is just too small or impractical for the job at hand. And, I might add, the diminutive size of the hatchet is a real plus, as it makes stowing in a backpack less of a chore.

All in all, this seems a great tool at a fair price. I highly recommend it!
