5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Axe
I compared the Fiskars Pro Chopping Axe with three other axes by using them to chop a fresh balsam fir log 8 inches in diameter. The result was that the Fiskars axe cut the deepest, did not catch or bind, and was the easiest to use because of its light weight and perfect balance. 2.0 out of 5 stars The blade is easily damaged
It has a very sharp blade and easily split my wood. Unfortunately, it is easily damaged if the blade comes into contact with hard objects in the wood... the blade does not appear to be made of high-quality tempered steel!!!

I compared the Fiskars Pro Chopping Axe with three other axes by using them to chop a fresh balsam fir log 8 inches in diameter. The result was that the Fiskars axe cut the deepest, did not catch or bind, and was the easiest to use because of its light weight and perfect balance. I was even surprised that I was able to chop more accurately and with less effort than with the 3.5 pound axe which I have used in trailwork for 20 years.

After this initial test, I felt enough confidence in the Fiskars axe to take it on a real trailwork project. I felled and removed 24 trees from the trail, using just this axe and a Fiskars 30 inch bow saw. The trees ranged in size from 4 to 15 inches in diameter, as measured just above the root swell, and consisted of a mixture of both softwoods and hardwoods. In all cases, the axe cut deeply and cleanly. It was equally superb for felling, bucking and limbing.

The only drawback to the Fiskars Axe is that the cutting edge is so thin that it can be dented in exceptionally hard wood. When this happened to me on one occassion, I effectively removed the dent by resharpening the axe in the field with a Diamond Sharpening Card, which is very portable and easy to use. Although I once owned eight axes of various kinds, I now own only four: two Fiskars Pro Chopping Axes and two Snow and Neally Our Best Axes. I do almost all of my chopping with the Fiskars axes, but I keep the Snow and Neally axes on hand for back up because they never dent.

5.0 out of 5 stars careful with that axe eugine, September 20, 2006

I ordered this after chopping my way through two 'store brand' axes, one fiberglass handle, one hickory handle. I thought i'd give this 'unbreakable' axe a try.

Deceptively light weight, thanks to the nice hollow handle, this axe has all its weight where it should be - at the head. Cuts deeper and faster than anything i've used before. Seems to hold an edge longer than my other axes also.

I'd quite happily say that it did just as good a job as my old 4Lb header, didn't stick anywhere near as much and maintained it's edge.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Production Axe you can buy., November 17, 2009
This review is from: Fiskars 7858 Pro Chopping Axe (Lawn & Patio)
Length:: 0:49 Mins

I'm no professional but I can still get through a log fairly quickly. The length and weight seem to be a perfect combination for fast chopping. I've chopped through hundreds of logs from pine to oak and the handle is still as tight around the head as the day I bought it. I bought Fiskars' sharpener for it, but wouldn't do that again. I prefer a coarse diamond hone from harbor freight or fine belt on a sander. Hope this helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars One awesome ax, April 29, 2007

I have been pleased with every Fiskars item that I have previously purchased. This ax is no exception. I ordered it last Tuesday and it showed up three days later (in a huge box). I used it today to take out a tree stump. It easily cut through some pretty thick, buried roots. It's very light and easy to swing, with the weight concentrated at the head. It's also made in Finland, not the Far East. I don't know what that one reviewer did to break the handle on his, but I can't imagine that I'll ever abuse it again like I did today. It passed with flying colors. Only regret is that I didn't purchase the Fiskars sharpener with it.

This Axe is the best I have ever used. It takes a bit to get use to how light the handle is, I'm use to a heavy wood handle with all my previous axes. Once you get use to the feeling it's fantastic. I'd say if you are splitting fire wood go with the Super Axe, it's the same handle but gives you an extra 2lbs on the head which will help cut through some of the hardwood easier.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best combination of weight and toughness..., September 2, 2007
This review is from: Fiskars 7858 Pro Chopping Axe (Lawn & Patio)
I have no complaints about this ax at all. Got one to clear brush on three acres of woods, but everyone kept wanting to use it instead of me. Had to end up buying two more, plus two Fiskars hatchets. Holds a good edge (certainly better than any other ax I've had) and light weight makes it easier to work with for hours at a time.

I have purchased fiskars axes before and absolutely love them, they do nick up pretty easily but the cutting ability of these axes is so awesome it's a small price to pay, buy the sharpener and prepare to be amazed a how easily this ax slices though everything in it's path

This is a mean freekin axe. Doesn't vibrate your hands when you come up a lil short and smack the log with the handle. Your not breaking this axe!! I just got done smashing the back of it with a sledge and she shows no signs of wear. No more hickory handles or fake fiberglass, this is the real deal right here. Get the sharpener while your at it.

This is the lightest axe I've ever held, and the most natural-feeling to swing I've ever swung. It's so light it takes hardly any effort for each swing, and I find the axe does most of the work. The 28" handle feels the perfect length to balance leverage and accuracy, and does not feel too short in the slightest (I'm six feet tall, and my 6'5" brother doesn't think it feels to short, either).

It comes sharp already, but a few swipes through the Fiskars axe sharpener (recommended) and it's razor sharp -- what's more, it stays that way after a full day's work. The handle feels solid, and I believe the "unbreakable" claim. I gave it a few good whacks (overshot the target) and the handle appears completely unaffected. This axe isn't just for chopping, either -- as long as logs are well-seasoned and less than about a dozen inches in diameter, this CHOPPING axe splits them like melons!

I find the plastic case that comes with it rather bulky and awkward, so I made my own leather sheath for it. But that's not really a complaint -- it's an opportunity to personalize the axe!

Buy it and you'll be addicted to chopping wood -- I couldn't sleep for three days after using it for the first time because I wanted to go out and use it again so badly! Best Axe I've EVER used.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Camping Axe Ever!, June 14, 2010

Light, strong, and indestructible to everything accept fire. I previously had one of these axes and it lasted for years; until it mistakenly got thrown in the camp fire with the log it was wedged into. I tried a couple of other axes and none compared to the Fiskars lack of weight and sharpness. It cuts thru an oak tree like it's made of balsa wood and you never have to worry about the handle splintering.
