Great Axes,
I got the 28" splitting axe and liked it so much I got the 28" chopper. At that time I got the Fiskars sharpener and let me tell you that after a few passes I got both axes to shave hairs off of my forearm. These cost a little more than the regular axes but if you take pride in your tools and like functional beauty they are well worth it. To those that say that the handle still breaks well you can break just about anything if you mis-use it. I hear the warranty is pretty good.

recommend the Fiskars 7854 instead for heavy duty splitting,

The right axe? If you plan serious heavy duty use, get the Fiskars 7854 Super Splitting Axe instead.
I was deciding between the 4.25 pound Fiskars 7854 Super Splitter and bought the 2.25 pound 7859 for two reasons: 1. I could get it locally (Sears) and 2. a review on Amazon strongly said the 7859 was better. However, the 7859 is only better for light to medium duty--it lacks the mass to go through hard, knotty and particularly fibrous wood. I just used the 7859 to split a cord of month-old 20+ inch post oak. The splitting was very tough going, even after I perfected my form. A fast swing is necessary for this axe. Given this axe's lack of mass, one needs to focus much more on speed. Even so, most good swings for the early splits on large rounds resulted in only a crack, which I would have to finish out with a wedge and sledge. The teflon coat prevents the axe from being razor sharp out of the box. So the sharpener is important from day 1 and should probably be purchased with the axe. The handle felt long enough to me, though if I had been splitting with a long-handled maul recently, I think the 24" handle of the 7859 would have felt short and made for many swing-throughs until form were adjusted. I only had one swing through drop below my 24" chopping block. It is always a good idea to keep one's legs apart and perpendicular to the swing with any axe. In sum, I wish I went with the heavier 7854.

Fiskars Pro Split Axe review,

This review is from: Fiskars 7859 28-Inch Pro Splitting Axe (Lawn & Patio)
I was not sure how functional the axe would be because of the light head weight. No reason to worry; the design makes up for the lack of mass in the head. I had no trouble splitting large live oak and heart cedar logs with this axe. This one is definitely a keeper.

This is only a quarter pound heavier than the Fiskars pro chopper, but the blade has the same type of wings as the Fiskars super splitter (only smaller). It's so light you can swing all day and not even get tired. After a few swipes through the Fiskars axe sharpener, it's razor sharp, and stays that way after many hours of splitting. I find the 28 inch handle perfect, and my 6'5" brother doesn't think it's too short, either.
It is made in Finland, and is guaranteed for the lifetime of the original purchaser that the handle will not break and the head will never loosen or separate. Awesome warranty. (And I've heard Fiskars backs up their warranty well -- my mother had a pair of Fiskars garden shears that broke, so she took a picture of them and sent it to Fiskars. They sent her TWO new pairs.) It splits small to medium spruce and aspen logs like butter, with almost no effort! However, for particularly knotty logs, or logs larger than about 15 inches in diameter, I recommend the Fiskars SUPER Splitter. And for wood that doesn't split but only tears like cottonwood, you'll still need sledge and wedge. But for all your standard sizes and types of wood logs, this axe makes splitting fun! Surprising splitting power despite its light weight! Highly recommended!

Easy for a woman to use,
This review is from: Fiskars 7859 28-Inch Pro Splitting Axe (Lawn & Patio)
I was having alot of trouble swinging my husbands maul. I could cut the seasoned wood but not the green, and I could not cut for very long nor raise the maul much above my head. Last night we came home with this fiskars splitting axe, and I'm splitting and chunking big logs, bigger than my waist....seasoned logs, heavy green logs, you name it. Sometimes I do have to get the wedge out and a slegde hammer and start a split on a really tough log- but I'm ok with that...the Fiskars makes short work of the rest of that log. For the gentleman who broke his handle using a hammer to drive his axe into the wood...well, its an AXE, not a maul, and your not supposed to do that. It even says so right on the package not to do that. It's a splitter, its SHARP, lightweight. I can get this over my head, and get a good swing and cut through alot of wood before I get tired. I had to get used to the shorter handle but compenstate by using a wider stance. I no longer need a man's help to chop wood, and for that I am happy. Used to be the hardest part of the chop was raising the axe but with this one, its easy-peasy! Get it, you won't regret it. Also it has a lifetime warranty!

Chopping wood for Pleasure?,

It may sound corny, but I actually like chopping wood with this thing. I chopped a cord and a half of green doug fir, in about an hour without even realizing it. Cuts like butter right through knots and all. Feels very solid.
On the contrary to a previous review, this axe is Very sharp. I am going to purchase the sharpener to maintain the edge. I plan on upgrading my whole yard * garden tool arsenal with Fiskars. The warranty is one of the best in the industry as well.

Great Axe,

The Fiskars Pro Splitting Axe is a great axe, from a great manufacturer, in a great country (Finland).
Pros: -Out of the boxes it's razor sharp -The handle doesn't splinter like wood -Doesn't dull or nick easily (The Fiskars hatchet seems to be made of cheaper steel or something, it nicks and dulls on wood this axe easily plows through.) -Cool head design- The head was obviuosly forged for one purpose: to split wood. That doesn't mean it can't do other tasks, like chopping down small trees, breaking windows, etc. -Lifetime Warrenty! - It's a Fiskars. Need I say more? Cons -Handle can be slippery when wet -The sheath is a peice of crap, but you can always get a leather one. -I've heard that when you hit the butt of the axe hard enough (like a hammer), the head can pop out. Don't know if it's true, but seems logical based on the design. Overall, great axe, no real glaring flaws, just needs a better sheath.

well made, however it is far too light weight and did not come with any real edge; understandable, it is a splitting ax. for something this light though, it should have been sharp. overall it is a quality product just not on the scale of anything more than a pack ax
