3.0 out of 5 stars Don't try on large branches
This unit works well for small branches. The light weight is appreciated, and the stainless blade is a useful upgrade as standard blades rust from the tree sap. But I used mine on some heavier branches, still within the recommended diameter range, and something slipped so that the blade no longer touches the anvil. The tool therefore is practically useless, as you do not...

Don't be fooled by the light weight of this item--it's cutting power is amazing. It's an anvil lopper, as opposed to the more popular bypass type of lopper, but the anvil is a much more efficient cutting method. Anvil cutting method (regardless of brand) tends to damage what it is cutting, so the best use of this tool is to cut dead branches, or live ones that you don't care if they survive of not. This is the perfect tool for cutting back rose bushes in the fall. If your arms ever get sore from wielding heavy tools, this is the ideal lopper/pruner for you. I believe this item is made in Finland--home of the infamous Fiskars orange handled scissors. This is the perfect gift for any gardener.

But I used mine on some heavier branches, still within the recommended diameter range, and something slipped so that the blade no longer touches the anvil. The tool therefore is practically useless, as you do not get a clean cut. There is no way to adjust or fix this pruner when that happens. And the lifetime warranty is of dubious value, as you must send the tool back at your expense, plus keep and be able to find the original receipt. They should model their warranty after Craftsman.

From the makers of the world's best scissors comes a lopper which is truly a must-have for the home gardener (or the pro, for that matter). Light in weight, powerful beyond it's size and infinitely useful, this is a quality tool at a good price.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best size lopper I've ever used., November 25, 2006

This review is from: Fiskars 7972 15-Inch PowerGear Anvil Lopper (Lawn & Patio)
These loppers are great, and they deserve to start a whole new size class of loppers. The industry standard long-handled loppers are hard to maneuver to the branch and to the cutting site. I don't know who started that long-handled lopper design, but they are just too big. With this size, you can get them in to the cut very quickly, and they cut good-sized branches well. These are very lightweight, but the handles are strong, and they cut great. I've got a pair that I've been using for about three years, and I've used them a lot. They're holding up fine. I just ordered three more pairs so that I can have a spare and give two for gifts.

4.0 out of 5 stars unbeatable weight-to-strength ratio, June 30, 2011
This review is from: Fiskars 7972 15-Inch PowerGear Anvil Lopper (Lawn & Patio)
Light weight. Strong. Withstands a fair bit of abuse. I've used these for perhaps 8 years for things like cutting mud covered roots, and aside from dulling the blade, they have held up.

There are two issues with this lopper:

First, if you sharpen the blade, it naturally gets smaller. Yet they designed the lopper so that it has a stopper between the handles which means the smaller blade will cease to make contact with the anvil. It seems the only fix for this is to modify the lopper by grinding down the stopper. This seems like a bad design. (If you've sharpened your lopper and solved this problem, please post a comment to this review.)

Second, it appears that Fiskars doesn't sell a replacement blade for this model, even though they sell blades for most of their other loppers. Why? Do they figure this model is cheap enough that people will just pay $30 for a new one instead of $5 for a blade?

I asked Fiskars Americas about the replacement blade issue, and they replied: "Fiskars Finland, where this product is manufactured, has never supplied a replacement blade. It is our understanding that the hardware for the lopper is screwed into the plastic and replacement hardware/blades would not fit in the same way. This is intended to be a throw away item. I apologize for any inconvenience."

While true that the screws go into plastic, it should still hold up to one or two blade changes, which would prolong the life of the product for about 25% of the replacement cost. (I've removed my blade to sharpen it, and the screws still hold fine.)

Lastly, while looking around for a replacement blade, I see one of the national home centers is selling a version of this with a titanium (coated) blade for about 30% less than the price here.

This is the second pair of these Fiskars loppers that I have bought. They are great for close quarter places, light and a lot stronger than you would expect. If I wear these out, as I did the last pair, I will be back for more. The product was received as advertised (new), shipped promptly and priced right - wish more Internet vendors were that way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best loppers ever!, July 5, 2008

This review is from: Fiskars 7972 15-Inch PowerGear Anvil Lopper (Lawn & Patio)
The Fiscars 7972, 15 inch anvil loppers are the toughest, most durable loppers I have ever used. They have survived cutting roots buried in gravel and other, similar abuses with no visible damage. Despite the compact 15 inch total length, these geared loppers have plenty of power for nipping dried hardwood limbs.

Constructed of glass-filled nylon, the only metal on the 7972's is the cutting blade and two large pivot screws. I have destroyed all-metal loppers. These promise to outlast 5 conventional ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Light Weight, Smooth Action, October 10, 2007
This review is from: Fiskars 7972 15-Inch PowerGear Anvil Lopper (Lawn & Patio)
These anvil loppers are feather light and have a very pleasant smooth action. You can work for much longer without your hands and arms getting tired. Be aware that anvil type pruners inevitably exert some crushing pressure on the stubs of branches left behind and so are best used for dead wood and robust plantings.
