5.0 out of 5 stars Sporty Hand Drill that Packs A Lot of Punch! July 9, 2010

One question...how did I get along for so many years without this little drill??

I'd seen this little hand drill around for a long time - but I thought it would be a "repeat tool", too similar to my Dremel, my regular Black and Decker drill, or my teeny-tiny little hand drill (which is actually more like a twisting screwdriver that works when it wants to). Had I known what I was missing out on, I would have gotten this as soon as Fiskars introduced it. It is THAT good.

Only having it for about a week, it's totally gotten a work out. I had no problems drilling through resin - and I drilled through the center (the thickest part) just to see what the drill would do. It drilled like a mighty drill - sans noise, electricity, and the hassle of getting out a bigger drill. I drilled through 3/4" copper blanks - and it ate them up! I even drilled through a penny - without any trouble at all. (You need a second person to hold whatever you are drilling, unless you use a vise or clamp.) The drill is easy to hold, fits well in the hand, is cute and compact, is very easy to crank...I just love it!

My daughter was playing with it and accidentally dropped it - on the concrete floor. As it flew across the garage, my heart sank. I just knew it would shatter and not work anymore. WRONG! There isn't a nick on it - the drill bit fell out, but I screwed it right back in. The drill comes with four bits - and the thinnest bit was in it during the..."accident" - but there wasn't any damage at all!

Yes, I love a lot of crafty stuff. My life revolves around arts and crafts. I pretty much live in a craft store - and wouldn't have it any other way. I always hesitate to say something is a "can't live without" - because really, how many craft items can you honestly not live without?

5.0 out of 5 stars Little but Sturdy March 22, 2009

The Fiskars Craft Drill is perfect for little hands.... I purchased this drill for my Granddaughter (age 5) to drill holes in wood to practice hammering nails and screwing screws. It helps preschoolers to start a hole with a drill before hammering or screwing... this small drill that has an enclosed gear is perfect for this job! This drill is easy for a preschooler to handle and accomplish a grown-up task safely!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little drill for little jobs November 5, 2006
Great little drill for jobs that need acurate depth control or small jobs where an electric drill is too much trouble. The drill has amazing drilling power with the added benefit of being able to control the speed in order to not perforate the underside of the drilling surface.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly handy June 14, 2010
After an accident with my flexible shaft drill, I realized I needed something that wouldn't spin as fast for drilling small plastic items for beads. A friend of mine suggested the Fiskars Craft Drill.
Quick vocabulary list if you haven't used drills before, the handle is the part you turn. The chuck is the part of the drill you put the bit in, it's like a collar holding an X shape, you tighten the collar around the X to hold in the bit, or loosen the collar to release the bit. The bit is the part that drills.
The obvious limitations are that's is a craft drill with a plastic body, it's not meant to drill metal, or anything really serious, but for paper, plastic and that sort of thing, it's wonderful. You have control over speed, since it's manually powered, children can use it with supervision, and it's quiet. Remember to always using something you don't mind marking behind whatever you're drilling. Old phone books work well for me.
The bits it comes with are a little big for the fine drilling I wanted to do, but after I got it home and out of the package, I couldn't wait to try it. Changing the bit is easy. Hold the handle still while you twist the chuck open, slip in the bit, then turn the chuck to close. No chuck keys or anything like that, you do have to make sure it's tightened as far as you can tighten it by hand.I drilled some Halloween skulls into big beads to put on a dice pouch I knitted my son.
The skulls are plastic and hollow, and the sort of thing my flexible shaft could have melted if I wasn't paying attention.
I needed smaller bits, and I wasn't sure if it would work with bits that were a lot finer. I got a small pack of 10 sizes including a 1/16th and 5/64th bit. They worked fine once I tightened the chuck up enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good piece of equipment November 23, 2009

I got this drill and started using it that day on my resin pieces that I have been working on. I was doing well with it until the very last piece when I... cracked a drill bit. The drill itself was fine and I know it was because of how rough I was using it to get the resin to work fr it. Despite that I really give the item 5 stars because I am not sure it was created to work on resin pieces (and truthfully it drilled through the notebook that I was holding it on - I strongly recommend an old phone book or a piece of wood under what you are drilling). I am going to continue using it (and am going to get a few more of the jewelry sized drill bit (looking for them tomorrow at a hardware store) and would recommend it with confidence. It was comfortable to hold, easy to use and quick on the start up. Totally got a 5 out of 5 for the price and the quality.
