Best Diggers Ever!,
By
This review is from: Fiskars 9653 Post Hole Digger (Lawn & Patio)
I'm a fencing contractor and have tried several different styles of diggers and can say, without a doubt, that these are the best on the market. Their slim design doesn't hang up on roots like other styles and they are able to cut through roots that others simply bounce off.
Also, looking around online, I've found that Amazon's price is much better than the other sites. The next cheapest price I found was $15 more.

These post hole diggers are great to use. They allow you to get a deep hole without having to widen the top of the hole for the handles to spread out. The handle design helps to keep your fingers from being pinched every time you open the spades. I will never go back to the old style again. I give this item a "Must Buy".

I am presently using three post hole diggers for a large deck project. This is a useful tool but don't throw out the cheapo wooden handled digger. For the shallower dirt I use the wooden handled tool mainly because it is lighter which I think is the most important consideration. You expend most of your energy pulling the tool out of the hole and if it is heavy, you'll wear out quick. None of the tools pull out more than a few handfuls at a time. The narrow blade of the Fiskar is great for shaving the sides of the hole and creating ledges. The hinges however are further from the cutting edges causing them to come together more parallel; because of this, loose loads tend to slip from the jaws more as you are pulling it out.

I am a fence contractor in central Texas where the ground is primarily hard packed soil and rock. Augers typically bounce off the ground and are practically impossible to use here. Having gone through many different types and makes of post hole diggers, I have to say that these Fiskars post hole diggers are by far the best I have used. Their solid one piece construction for each arm means that there is no part to twist and break like most post hole diggers. They have a nice weight to them allowing them to really bite into the soil with every down stroke. The blades stay straight and sharp through tons of abuse, even when striking rock constantly. They also are able to take a LOT of side ways force when trying to loosen stones or old pieces of concrete from previous post construction. The beautiful part of the handle design is that you aren't rapping your knuckles every time you push your hands towards one another, and due to the slim design of the tool, you can dig a hole deeper than a traditionally designed post hole digger. Lastly, no one beats their warranty. Mine eventually broke at the welded pivot point for the handles after several years of use. I emailed them a picture of the broken tool and my proof of purchase and shortly there after I received my replacement in the mail. No shipping costs or other charges out of my pocket. Great tool, great customer service!

Lightweight and easy to use. Will dig a deeper hole in less time than a conventional digger. This will make a slightly larger diameter hole than a conventional digger, so you will need a bit more concrete for fill. It's almost impossible to bang your knuckles together when using this. The all-steel construction is very sturdy, I expect this to last for years. Wood or fiberglass handles usually break or separate from the digging head after only a few uses. The only drawback is the signature orange handles slip off when lifting a load of soil. I recommend gluing them on.

I've been a fencer my whole life and I've used these diggers for the last five years. Other types don't compare to the ease of use.
And when used correctly, i.e. no forcing the handles apart, they last for at least a year (daily use). Amazon has a good price and they ship in great condition. [...]

Fiskars 9653 post hold digger - If you really need extra handle strength (rocks etc.) then maybe these are good since they are made completely out of metal tubes. I found them to be way too heavy for normal post hole digging. I could dig twice as much with a fiberglass handled pair of post hole diggers, simply because of the lower weight allowing faster movements and requiring fewer breaks for my arms to rest. The orange handle covers came off frequently, you should plan on having to glue them on. Fiskars design only allows maybe 1 foot deeper than standard. If you really want deep, look at a hand held auger design instead.

I put this post hole digger to work the day I received it from Amazon. You truly can dig a 48 inch hole with no problem, plus I didn't think it weighs anymore then the wooden handled type. Five stars all the way....

I couldn't seem to dig past about 30" with traditional post-hole diggers, but with this tool can easily go about four feet deep. It's a great design and very well-built, and made my project possible.
