Could be great,

This tool works great and is sturdy, however the handle is held on by a single small screw that comes loose constantly. I have replaced the screw with a larger one and that has helped greatly. The big handle is a great idea however the plastic is the weak link here. Mine broke in half at the molding mark on top.I went on line and contacted Fiskars and was rewarded with a free new handle. I feel the metal portion of the shovel is very stout, but I worry I will be contacting Fiskars again for a new handle. We will see. I will enjoy the tool while it works like a champ for now. I don't baby my tools, but feel it has this weak link. It could be great.

Great shovel,

I got this shovel at Lowes because it was the best spade they had in stock. I've been using it for almost a year, and it is nearly indestructible. The last week or so I've been double digging new garden beds in my sand-clay backyard (as hard as concrete after a week of no rain), and it has been a comparative breeze. I've resharpened the shovel once to get through the large pine roots and stumps, and the plastic handle needs re-tightening about every 3 hours of digging (it is held on by a single screw, I'll probably give it a drop of super glue to lock the threads as it is wiggling loose). I am able to push this shovel all the way into the ground, and then jump up and down on the handle with all of my weight without it showing any signs of stress whatsoever (the handle of the fork I was using snapped in 2 with much much less force).I highly recommend this for gardening. My only reservation is that for another $20-$30 you could move up to something made of stainless steel.

Broke right in half,

I had this item a little under a year, stored it in the garage. It has gotten a lot of use and I really liked it until it the spade portion broke right in half while spading up some grass. I went back to where I bought it and they said they could do nothing and deal directly with the manufacturing. They said they received my request for help but have not contacted me and now it is over a week later.

I don't write too many reviews but, this dang shovel has treated me so well I feel like I owe it one. I didn't like digging much in the past. It was hard work and I was constantly forcing the shovel against a root or stone which would break the handle. Wooden handles splinter, crack and break -they leave my hands worn out. Fiberglass are not much better. This thing has completely changed me. I actually like digging. No seriously I do. I have had this for about 4 years now. In that time I dug 300 feet of 1 foot deep trenches and 150 feet of 2 foot trenches with every possible obstacle. I can't even guess how many yards of dirt gravel and sand I have moved. No, it's not going to chop through a 3 inch root but, it will never break trying. The light steel shaft is not round -it's sort of a rounded triangle shape that will not bend. It has a slight curve near the blade where you can easily lift with one hand while grabbing the D grip at the other when moving dirt. The over sized D grip lets you grab with both hands and pull back after pushing deep into the ground so you get a lot of leverage. Like another person mentioned, the screw holding the handle also came out for me -I replaced it with a larger spare screw and it's been fine ever since. The plastic handle will not break. I bought this at Lowes -I think it was called the "Big Step" back then. They no longer seem to carry it -I assume that's because you'll never need to buy another shovel like it again. See my picture of the shovel after 4 years. still going like a champ.

This is a replacement for my favorite spade, lost my first one in a divorce. I have broken many shovels in my day prying up shrubs and small trees to move or get rid of but this is the spade that has taken all of my abuse and has stood up to it all!

Highly recommend the Fiskars 9667 Spade, is a great shovel for all kinds of digging, very sturdy! Just check the handle screw now and then, it may loosen but not the end of the world. Recently bought this one here to keep my lady friend from stealing mine!

Solid shovel, less than solid screw for handle.,
By Reglith Lunus (The First State) - See all my reviews

Its a great shovel, the ergonomics of the handle is spot on, and so is the durability...sort of. The shovel is good, the shaft is good, but the handle is held on by a mangy little stainless steel screw. I mean, seriously Fiskars, grow a set, man up, take the initiative, and make a solid handle for your solid product, stop being cheap and cutting corners, the economy is simply NOT THAT BAD...yet. It unscrews or, in my case, breaks entirely within a few days of good usage. I personally, just use it without the handle. So, if you heard all the legends about Fiskars quality shovels and want a self fulfilling prophecy, go with the Fiskars round point that has the simple kind of handle you CANNOT break...easily, instead of this ludicrous D handle crap. Other than that, it will outperform just about everything out there, and is a steal for the price on Amazon.

This is the perfect tool for the gardener who wants to remove St. Augustine sod in Florida, in nice square or rectangular chunks, to make room for planting vegetables. It is very rugged. The top of the blade is bent back perfectly for applying foot pressure. The loop ("D") is large enough to insert both hands for more leverage. This spade is worth every penny I paid! I was so inspired that I bought one for a friend for Christmas.
