5.0 out of 5 stars essential for anyone who does a lot of cutting
The spring action is a real hand-saver. I occasionally have carpel tunnel syndrome and joint pain. These scissors are the easiest cutting tool I have ever used. They make regular scissors seem old fashioned.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great scissors with one annoying disappointment
I use these scissors a lot, as they're in general great scissors. They'll easily cut through several layers, including a combination I often use of felted wool, woven interfacing, and fusible fleece. The only problem is the little orange catch -- it often slides forward during a cut so that I can't complete the cut until I push the catch back again. This has turned...

This review is from: Fiskars Softouch Scissors, Left/Right Hand, 8 Inches, 3.25-Inch Cut (99117097) (Tools & Home Improvement)
The Fiskars 9911 model pictured with this listing is the older version of these same scissors -- which is the reason I chose to purchase them here. However, it appears that Fiskars no longer produces the version pictured. They new model has been redesigned to be more "ergonomic" I suppose... but the slide lock mechanism on the new models isn't located in the same spot which makes it slightly less convenient for me large hands. Also, the lock on the new model tends to slip forward when cutting and hinders the range of the scissors and will occasionally slip back and let the scissors open when they are in my holster.

All in all I have always been happy with the Fiskars scissors -- the blades stay sharp and the cutting action is smooth -- but as with some other products in the past (think "New Coke") the older model is superior to the newer.

Excellent control for cutting fabric, etc., without engaging all the hand and arm joints normally required. Much easier for me to use with my arthritic hands.

The only problem is the little orange catch -- it often slides forward during a cut so that I can't complete the cut until I push the catch back again. This has turned what would have been a five-star review into a three-star, as it happens a lot and is very annoying. From the rest of the reviews, I see this isn't a common problem but does happen occasionally. If they'd fix this, these would be hands-down my favorite scissors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Fabric Crafts, May 31, 2010

Scissor Fiskars Spring Action / B00006IFNC

I've been using these with my fabric crafts for over a year now, and I love them. The spring action makes it much easier to cut large amounts of fabric without tiring your hand and arm, and these scissors provide for both a strong (multiple layers of fabric) and precise cut without any fraying of the material. I especially like the little orange slide button safety feature that holds the scissors closed with not in use, and the flat bottom of the scissors slides perfectly along my quilting mat and means that I don't have to lift the fabric very high in order to make my cuts (which also helps with precision).

When I went scissors shopping five years ago, I had just made the unhappy discovery that Fiskars' razor edged scissors were too stiff to manipulate. I do a lot of sewing, and I needed a sharp pair of scissors that wouldn't wear out my hands. However, they had to do a good job cutting out my pattern pieces, too! That's when I discovered these spring loaded scissors, which felt like an answer to all my prayers. I took a chance on the all purpose blades and never regretted it. When I went scissors shopping again last week, hoping to have a backup pair ready in case my trusty original pair should fail me or go missing, I noticed they'd made some changes to the scissors. I read the reviews carefully and decided to take a chance. After a marathon cutting session this weekend, I'm happy to report that despite the changes that Fiskars made, my hands are happy, the scissors easily open and shut, and my pattern pieces look crisp, not ragged at all. So the blades themselves seem as excellent as ever!

Unfortunately, the changes to the handles are not as nice. I'll outline the changes briefly and discuss their downsides.
1. They changed the handle material. They added more cushioning (good!) but they also cheapened the feel so it isn't as smooth (bad!). Time will tell if the lighter plastic is a plus or not. It could mean less fatique or it could mean the handle will break or crack over time.
2. The catch, although still accessible from both sides, is harder to move. The old style made it easy to flip the catch on and off with your thumb so you never had to take your hands off the blades. The new style requires you to use your pointer finger, and it doesn't feel like it's well connected to the catch on the other side. So if you flip the catch on the left side, it drags a little on the right side before it engages. It feels cheap.

I'll still a fan of these scissors, so 5 stars all the way. I just hope that the changes don't hurt their durability over the long run. My first pair is five years old and still going strong. I hope I'll be able to say the same for this pair in another five years.

3.0 out of 5 stars Startling but works well, November 27, 2011
This review is from: Fiskars Softouch Scissors, Left/Right Hand, 8 Inches, 3.25-Inch Cut (99117097) (Tools & Home Improvement)
Having arthritis in my thumbs can make the use of regular scissors painful. These scissors were helpful in eliminating the pain and cut fairly well though they are rather large and cumbersome. My main issue with them is that they are spring loaded and have a sliding clip to keep them closed when not in use. This clip has a mind of its own allowing the scissors to randomly snap open loudly. My solution has been never to store them closed, but this is somewhat awkward and dangerous.

These are great scissors, not only for in home tasks but also great in the garden and work bench. As a senior with arthritis issues in both hands and shoulders, their pop-up style has allowed me the freedom to do tasks minus the pain I would have had from regular scissors. As a serious gardener, I can honestly say they are the best dead-heading tool I've found, plus trimming of stems and branches much larger then you would think possible with scissors. At this point I buy them 2 at a time because my husband enjoys them as much as I do ... oh, and the reason we tend to purchase them once a year is because our in home pair has been used for some out door chore you would never expect to use them for ... unless you've owned them.

These scissors are great for ladies who sew a lot. The thumb is not used directly to operate them - just the other fingers and the palm of the hand. We were disappointed, however, that they are no longer made in the USA (but in China). Only time will tell if they are as good as the US made ones.

I have found most Fiskar shears to be of good quality over the years... and I loved this specific model for quite a while. I do a fair amount of cutting and the spring action etc. is all the good things that others have already mentioned. Eventually, (before the scissors had been used extensively) - the spring popped out. It looked okay - but did not work well on reinsertion. Without the spring action - the scissors are no longer easy to use. I think I only need a new spring - but haven't figured out where to get one yet. If anyone has easy info about that - I'd appreciate it.
