The Downspout Diverter Makes the Difference
Designed to easily integrate into your home's existing downspouts, Fiskars worry-free diverter kits, included with most Fiskars Rain Barrels (not included with the Fiskars Saguaro Rain Barrel system), channel rainwater from your downspout into the rain barrel. When the rain barrel is full, the diverter channels the water back to the downspout and away from your home's foundation. A worry-free solution for easy access to water to perk up your tomatoes or refresh your rose bushes.

How Do The Downspout Diverters Work?
The downspout diverter channels water from the gutter downspout to the barrel. Once the barrel is full, the diverter will bypass the water down the remainder of the downspout.
Both downspout diverter systems are designed to work with standard 2-by-3-inch or 3-by-4-inch downspouts. These two sizes are standard for most homes in the United States.

How much rain will I collect?
The amount of rain your Fiskars Rain Barrel System will collect depends on two things: The amount of rain that comes down on your roof, and how much roof area drains into the gutter and downspout where you've installed the diverter. As an example, if you have a 500-square-foot roof section feeding a downspout, it will take about two tenths of an inch of rain to fill a 52-gallon barrel. A roof area of only 1000 square feet can provide approximately 600 gallons of water during a one-inch rainfall.

It does take effort and tools to install, but that's not the real issue -- the top tends to warp on hot days, pop off the barrel and is difficult to put snugly back -- important if you don't want a breeding ground for bugs! It's not enough to weigh down the top -- you have to carefully line it up for a snug fit. When it warps and torques a tiny bit from the heat that's nearly impossible.

I was worried when the box arrived from Amazon - it was two boxes taped together and it looked a bit misshapen and worse for wear. Inside, everything was in fine shape however. The downspout diverter is wonderful but the two sizes you get are both made for rectangular downspouts. If your gutters have square downspouts (and a lot of vinyl ones are square) you will have to replace it for the diverter to work. Set up was easy once we read the instructions (yes, you have to do that or it will not work) and we are ordering a second today to connect to it.

My wife bought two of these last summer and I've never seen any other rain barrel that has been designed this well. Rather than rain water pouring in through a mesh screen on the top (which can clog with leaves, allow sunlight in, and also bugs) this barrel's lid is totally covered and airtight. Rain water enters through a hose on the side connected to the downspout until the barrel is filled. Any overflow goes back through the downspout. Check out the pictures showing a close up of the downspout attachment. It's a great design. The whole barrel is very attractive, much more so that many others. Nice product. We have the two barrels connected together cross feeding a single spigot.
