5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, the classic gets a worthy release August 1, 2010
In a post apocalyptic world destroyed by nuclear war, one man stands above the suffering of ordinary people. Kenshiro (Ken) is the last successor of the ancient Chinese fighting style known as Hokuto Shinken. With this fighting style, Ken acts as a post apocalyptic Robin Hood of a sorts, fighting against the injustices brought upon the weak by the strong. It's like an animated version of Mad Max, but more violent and longer.

That's about the best synopsis of the series a person can give. Each episode usually centers around Ken fighting some gang and their leader to save some oppressed individuals, the whole time giving us more insight into Ken's own background.

WARNING to PARENTS- this series is VIOLENT. They don't tend to show copious amounts of blood or anything (though there is some blood) and all the head explosions and exploding bodies are highly stylized, it is STILL violent.

There have been a couple of releases of this series over the years and this one EASILY bests them all in terms of video and audio quality.

Nothing short of amazing. I have not noticed any banding, blocking, cross coloration or any other video abnormalities in this set. Discotek got their hands, it appears to me, on the painstakingly remastered version that was released in a box set in Japan as a 28 disc set (included the first and second TV series, along with the 3 specials and a bonus Mandarin language episode). The Japanese release of this series would set a person back north of $1000. Assuming there are 4 boxes for all 152 episodes at $60 MSRP, if all you want is the show you are saving almost $750 buying the US release.

In all the time I've spent watching these episodes, I have NOT seen ANY dirt or dust and very little to NO cell jitter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic series, great dvd release September 16, 2010

The previous more thorough review is pretty spot on.
The restoration and translation to dvd on this release is nothing short of amazing. The pictures is extremely crisp and clean and the subtitles are better than the original release.
There is a lack of extras, but I would not expect very good/complete extras on a US release of something like this. Even if available, they likely would not be in english (subs). The omission of extras shouldn't put you off from buying this though.

Two things to note however:
1) This is only the first 36 episodes of a 152 episode series (well, across 2 series).
2) There are only 5 (five) discs in the set, not 6 (this was previously mentioned, worth reiterating).

5.0 out of 5 stars Currently my favorite anime...obsession July 11, 2011
I owned season 1 of Fist of the North Star previously (released by Manga Video) and watched it in English. I have to agree with others..."Ken!!" in that little girl voice started to annoy me. I sold back the Manga Video copies for this new boxed set. I am now watching them in Japanese since the rest of the seasons will not be dubbed. "Ken!!" isn't quite so annoying in the original Japanese for some reason. :-)

The case is ok, but it would have been nice to have a booklet to accompany, considering the following this franchise has.

I haven't noticed any skips or defects on my discs. I don't have the Manga Video season 1 to compare, but the colors seem awesome to me.

If you are unfamiliar with Fist of the North Star it's not for the weak or young. We see limbs torn, bodies ripped in half, heads exploding...etc. I have to say though, in my opinion it's very tastefully done. I'm not a fan of gore in film, so for me the violence in this anime is well done.

Post apocalypse is one of my favorite genres, and this series does not disappoint on that front. There is a lot of repetitive narrative in most of the first season, but give it a chance because the story is actually quite good.

I'm eagerly awaiting the 3rd boxset.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the beginning of the greatest anime saga ! August 7, 2010
There will plenty of reviews concerning the video and audio quality of the remastered series. This release definitely passes those litmus tests. This review is for those of you on the fence concerning purchasing the first 36 episodes of a 152 episode series, and what you may have read negatively concerning the series.
Yes, it is ultraviolent and makes no apologies for it, there are no panda bears or light hearted comedy. It is a post-apocalyptic world were suffering is prevelant, and it is survival of the fittest. Mad Max with martial arts and superpowered mutants. I don't compare this to Dragonball Z and the like, they have nothing in common with this series. This series is in a class by itself, however you may not realize that in this volume.
The first 36 episodes are an introduction to the Fist of the North Star saga, albeit a very slow introduction and some people give up on it easily, as these days most series are wrapped up in 26 episodes or less. I will tell you the first 36 episodes are the weakest of the entire series. You will watch Kenshiro beat up punk after punk (in ironic and violent ways), but hang in there, it gets absolutely awesome in the second volume to the end.
When the series first came out, it was alongside a weekly manga, and the writers were not sure if the series would last or what direction to take it into. That is why the early episodes are rough and predictable, and the Shin/Yulia backstory seems to drag on. After the first season, the series proved to be one of the most popular in Japan. The budget increased, the animation quality improved, and the writers set out to flesh out a story of 4 brothers, Kenshiro, Raoh (!), Toki, and Jagi, their conflict to be the heir to the deadly style of Hokuto Shin Ken.
