3.5 stars - fun, but not what I was hoping for,

This review is from: For a Fistful of Dollars (Audio CD)
2005's For a Fistful of Dollars is the third album from German melodic rock band Soul Doctor, which features Fair Warning vocalist Tommy Heart. I hadn't previously heard of this band, but when I read in a Power Play article that Heart was a member I knew I had to check it out.I found out pretty quickly that Soul Doctor has an entirely different sound than Fair Warning. This is a bluesy kind of melodic rock that makes me think of bands like Tangier, or some of Bonfire's later albums. It lacks the earnest love songs of a Fair Warning album, instead focusing on hair metal style lyrics. I have to say it's weird hearing Heart in this setting, even if he is singing in a rougher tone of voice. With a different singer (David Glen Eisley would have rocked these songs) this album might have sounded more authentic, but then again with a different singer I probably wouldn't have picked it up in the first place. For a Fistful of Dollars is an enjoyable enough album. It's bluesy (well, as bluesy as a bunch of German AOR dudes can get at least), swinging and has a fun energy. It's nowhere near as memorable as the average Fair Warning album though, and I don't think I'll be running out to find any more Soul Doctor albums. This one satisfied my curiosity, but didn't exactly make me a fan. |
