Basic black therapy in a simple roll of foam!,

This review is from: J Fit 36-Inch High-Density Foam Roller (Sports)
My physical therapist had me try a foam roll at her office and suggested that I get one for home since it had been a excellent way to stretch my upper back and thoracic outlet area where I was having difficulty. Despite being "hard" (these are not comfy, squishy foam but firm) it is incredibly relaxing and offers a great stretch by simply lying on it lengthwise and opening your arms in various positions including overhead. I understand there are also exercises and other uses which might make it even more versatile, but I am happy simply lying on it for 15 minutes per day and getting a relaxing stretch to maintain my improvement with P.T.
Concerning the size: I am rather short (5 feet)and the 36 inch length goes the length of my spine with a bit to spare, but a very tall person might find it difficult to "fit" on it lengthwise. This model is a more expensive than the one that my therapist uses, but has a smoothed surface in black which I prefered to have around the house, and which I thought might hold up better. The only reason that it gets 4 stars rather than 5 is that this model is really identical in feel to my therapist's $10- model now that I have tried them both. The therapist's is white and a bit fuzzy from use...but has obviously held up with much greater daily usage. The asthetic is nice but I might have saved myself some money by going with the simpler white version. Therefore, I can't say for sure that the color is worth the additional cost since the durability of either would be equal. Overall, though, this is a great product. Simple but very useful.

I bought one of these from Amazon in Nov-2010 and liked it so much I bought a second one for my buddy in May-2011. While the new one functions the same as the first, it does not appear to be an authentic product. It is not labeled with "j/Fit" on the end, it is a little shorter, the surface is rougher, and the styrofoam seems to have more voids in it. When I asked Amazon if this were authentic or counterfeit, they did not respond to my question but refunded me a few dollars.
While foam rollers are great for self-massage and releasing sore muscles, the cautious consumer might not want to pay a premium for this particular item.

The 36" High Density Foam Roller lives up to it's name. I've used the less density ones(white foam)at the gym. This one stays firmer (for those you can handle the firmness on their muscles). The 36' size is great for rolling the length of your back (on the floor or against the wall).
Works great when I come home from lifting weights and can break the tension on my back muscles,at my liesure, while watching T.V. Also great for loosening back tension before or after a golf game. Shipping and packaging was on target. Great job.

If you have back, shoulder or neck pains and have been using the typical white foam roller for stretching and exercises, this high density roller may be a welcome alternative. It doesn't crush over time, and does a much better job of providing a firm base for laying and rolling on.
It took one session to get a little used to the extra firmness, but now when I use the other white rollers at gyms when I travel, they almost feel mushy in comparison.

This roller has really helped cut down on soreness after long runs (I am training for a 1/2 and full marathons). Quality seems to be a bit better than the ones available at my gym.

"My trainer recommended a j/fit high density foam roller but after reading some recent reviews, I was concerned about receiving the correct roller. I called j/fit customer service to inquire and they assured me that Amazon was sending out the correct roller. For a short time the logo was not on the roller due some embossing problems but that is no longer an issue. They also let me know that their roller is made out of the highest grade medical foam available and I was surprised that the factory is In California! It's nice to find something not made in China for once. I do tend to have sensitive skin and certain additives and fillers cause an itchy reaction.
I just received my roller and so far so good. It's stiff as a board and hurts like heck and doesn't seem to dent like my old white roller. I haven't had it long enough to give a review on the longevity but will post a follow up."

J Fit 36-Inch Extra Durable Hi-Density Foam Roller've had a problem back for 40 years and have been to various specialists. Periodically when my back goes out, I have seen a physical therapist for months in additon to stretching morning and night. I also swim three times a week which helps tremendously.
I am cautious about what I carry, push or pull, but there are times I have to carry camera gear and even with a rolling cart, I end up with a back problem that can last months. This roller is an absolute Godsend. When my back is bad, I put it under the lower part of my back, and roll myself back and forth from sternum to my lower waist for a short time morning and night. It seems to ease my back and soften the ache. It takes out the "glitch." This might not be the way you are supposed to use it, but it works for me. I think it's great and I am thrilled that I bought it. If I can't get to the physical therapist, or get in the pool, I know the roller is my "saftey net" that will take the edge off my ache immediately until I can take more serious steps. Lynn Gilbert

I ordered this item after complaining to some colleagues about back stiffness and pain and having them tell me I had to have this product. Without doing any real research I just clicked and ordered.
Pros: Arrived quick and seems to be a quality product at a reasonable price. Cons: Literally no documentation came with the item. Luckily the web is filled with information to help you decide if this product is right for you and which one. 1) You-tube is filled with videos demonstrating how to correctly use the product. I strongly suggest anyone who is unfamiliar with a foam roller watch a few of these videos before buying. While the roller certainly can help with muscle tension etc. improper use can do more harm than good. 2) The hi-density foam roller is not an entry-level product. People who are new to this might benefit starting out with a softer version and working their way up to the hi-density roller. While the roller certainly can help with muscle tension etc. improper use can do more harm than good. 3) Remember, regardless if you buy softer or higher density foam, the product is foam. This means that if you buy a large one, you can cut it with a bread knife and have two rollers. Note: if you do this with the hi-density roller you will have to "seal" the edges with a lighter or small butane torch. I love my roller but I wish that I had done just a little more research before I jumped in and bought this one. I would have probably opted for a more "beginner" roller or purchase "the grid" foam roller. I may do that anyway because I can see some advantages of having more than one type of these products.

GREAT QUALITY ROLLER,
By Willdog (Portland, or, US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: J Fit 36-Inch High-Density Foam Roller (Sports)
I have been using my j/fit roller for about a month now and what a difference it has made in my running. I was having a lot of trouble with my IT band and about a mile into the run my leg would stiffen up so bad that I would have to turn around and walk back. My trainer recommended using a j/fit roller, preferably the high density. I tried a few rollers at my gym and this is the information I gathered on difference between the rollers:White basic foam rollers were softer, almost too soft for my needs, less expensive, wears out rather quickly and shows grooves almost immediately. (I am a larger person, this could have been the reason for the immediate wear.) Might be a better roller for a smaller, lighter weight person. Good price point. Blue EVA High density roller was really nice. It was medium firm, firmer than the white roller with a very smooth texture and feel. Almost soft on the outside with a firmer feel once you get into the roll. It was much more expensive, but my trainer says that he uses them because they last the longest of all rollers and for his gym he needs a strong roller that is going to hold up with the many people who use it. Black High Density roller was very stiff and hard. Not much give at all, more expensive than the white roller but less expensive than the blue EVA. It is similar to the white, as it the same foam, just more foam is used, hence the term "high density". So it will last longer than the white but not as long as the blue. I ended up choosing the black high density, one for the price, two, because I liked that deep hard feel while rolling. It really hurts but it feels like a very deep massage and I can get into the roll a little better and feel like I am kneading all my hurts away! I felt immediate results and one month later, I am still rolling and thankfully still running. Everyday my IT band feels better and gives me less trouble. I am convinced that without rolling, I wouldn't be running anymore. I am a convert for life! I am very happy with the quality of my j/fit roller, it has held up great under my weight. A few specks of black foam have come off the roller, but with as much use as I have given this device, and what it has done for my body, I am not complaining. I am glad that my trainer recommended j/fit to me and I will repeat the purchase when this roller finally wears out!

This was a great purchase. I've been using it to warm up/massage my IT band, piriformis, calf muscles,
and spinal vertebrae. It has done wonders! If you are looking for a good, firm roller, get this one. It is worth the cost & will last a long time. |
