4.0 out of 5 stars Great overview on proper eating
This is a very good book to get an understanding on how the digestive system works in simple layman's language. The book tells how it is best to eat within an eight hour span while the body focuses on the digesting process. Then the next eight hours the system focuses on assimilating. The last eight hours of the day the body focuses on eliminating. People usually eat...

3.0 out of 5 stars Very pro-vegan
Fit for Life was all the rage in the late 80's. I admit that much of the advice works for the short term. While I cannot support the anti-meat campaign that it endorses, I found that most of the advice works. I have tried the food combining and it does keep one more mentally alert. I admire that Harvey and Marilyn Diamond were not afraid about criticizing current...

This is a very good book to get an understanding on how the digestive system works in simple layman's language. The book tells how it is best to eat within an eight hour span while the body focuses on the digesting process. Then the next eight hours the system focuses on assimilating. The last eight hours of the day the body focuses on eliminating. People usually eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks at night using up sixteen hours and never fully getting to the eliminating cycle. Stored toxins are unhealthy for you. The book also talks about proper food combining. Proteins need acid enzymes; carbohydrates need alkaline enzymes. If you eat the two together they cancel each other out and you end up with no food valve from what you ate. Vegetables go with anything. This book makes common sense. It's a life style way of eating, not a diet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fit For Life a Must Read, February 14, 2011
This review is from: Fit For Life (Paperback)
Harvey's new book was very helpful. I deal with a lot of health challenges like adrenal fatigue. It is amazing how the body has the power to heal itself if given the proper tools! This concept was new to me until I read Harvey's Fit For Life A New Beginning, 2011. He just covers so much ground while giving great advice which is understandable. I feel like my health condition has improved drastically from following what is written in this book. I also appreciated how this book is helpful to individuals with food sensitivities. I'm gluten intolerant and was worried I wouldn't be able to follow his recommendations. It was no problem. Thank you Mr. Diamond for this fine piece, and to all who are curious, I recommend you pick up a copy.

Harvey and Marilyn explain food combining in a way we can all understand and why eating any other way has consequences...it will haunt you for the rest of your life. I always try to keep an extra copy on hand to give to others.

Fit for Life was all the rage in the late 80's. I admit that much of the advice works for the short term. While I cannot support the anti-meat campaign that it endorses, I found that most of the advice works. I have tried the food combining and it does keep one more mentally alert. I admire that Harvey and Marilyn Diamond were not afraid about criticizing current eating habits, such eating dairy and raw fish (sushi). This book might not be for the serious athlete, but it has some good information. Good food for thought if you want to feel better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fit for Life Works! but for people WITHOUT blood sugar issues, February 18, 2008
This review is from: fit for life (Hardcover)
If you do not have blood sugar issues, the recommendations in this book regarding food will work to reduce weight and to increase overall well being. The authors have laid out a very healthful diet making this book worth the price. However, if you have diabetes or hypoglycemia, this diet will wreak havoc with your blood sugar. The statistic is that 1 out of ever 4 Americans will get diabetes at some point in their life time and I have found in my own experience that many people have hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) such as myself and not even know it. Do you get headaches? Do you feel sleepy after lunch or get brain fog? Does your vision blur? If so, then stay away from the Fit for Life (and check out the Low Blood Sugar Hand Book by Krimmel which I have lost much weight on as well and it is also a proponent of natural foods (non processed).
The author's of Fit for Life are a proponent of quick absorption of food which will give you a boost of energy but it will also spike your blood sugar and this is tragic for those with diabetes and hypoglycemia. In fact, the opposite approach is warranted to have slow food absorption to keep blood sugar stable.
In addition, there is much controversy surrounding the author's credibility. In an article published in the March 1986 issue of Nutrition Forum by James J. Kenney, Ph.D., R.D. who is a nutritionist at the Pritikin Longevity Center in Santa Monica, California. "Harvey Diamond obtained a "doctorate in nutrition science" and Marilyn Diamond obtained "certification in nutrition counseling" from the American College of Health Science (also called the American College of Life Science). This is an unaccredited correspondence school in Austin, Texas, which teaches a naturopathic philosophy called "Natural Hygiene." And in 1982, the Texas Commissioner of Higher Education ordered that the school "cease and desist advertising or otherwise offering degree programs without a Certificate of Authority from this agency." The school's response was that it "was exempt from the law because it was a religious institution".
These are some concerning facts about the authors educational background and therefore their credibility but having said all that, eating natural water based foods is 10000 times more healthful then cheeseburgers and fries. If you have no blood sugar issues, follow the books advice and you will see results.
