Product Description

Sit and Be Fit is a non-profit organization that produces America's award winning television exercise series, Sit and Be Fit. Each chair exercise program is carefully researched and designed by host Mary Ann Wilson, RN and a team of physical therapists, doctors, and exercise specialists. Sit and Be Fit has been broadcast since 1987 on PBS stations to over 86 million U.S. households annually, and is recognized by the National Council on Aging (NCOA) as a "Best Practice" program in health promotion and aging.

Review

"The SIT AND BE FIT program is practical, effective and inspiring. It repeatedly makes the point that our bodies are our most precious possession. It is highly recommended."--Walter M. Bortz II, M.D., Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine

"Your SIT AND BE FIT videos have brought the importance of exercise to the geriatric and less mobile population with significant benefit. I can strongly endorse these videos."--John A. Fagan, M.D.,Geriatric Specialist, Rockwood Clinic. P.S., Spokane, WA --John A. Fagan, M.D.,Geriatric Specialist, Rockwood Clinic. P.S., Spokane, WA

"I accidentally came to discover the Sit and Be Fit exercise program and it has proved to be one of the best things that has happened for my health and well-being. I have been struggling with a debilitating neck and shoulder injury for the past three years and after just a month-and-a-half of doing the Sit and Be Fit exercises I have regained almost my full range of motion in my right arm. I have also found that the rest of my body is getting stronger and more flexible and that my posture has really improved. And, all those small but annoying aches and pains are virtually gone." --Mauilea P.

"I discovered your show 2 years ago. I want to tell you YOU ARE WONDERFUL. Your demeanor, your hair, your cheerful smile every day. The exercises are just right for me. Your constant admonitions to go only to your own range of motion so we don't feel bad if we can't go as high as you. I love your show and it is helping me to stay healthy and mobile. I tell all my friends about it. You are doing a wonderful public service for us old and retired people who can't get out much. May God bless you. Keep up the good work." --Mrs. Dorothy P.

Let me first state that I am in a wheelchair. If you are handicapped, cannot use your legs or have knee problems, you will be disappointed with this set of DVDs. Disc #2 is full of STANDING exercises, a lot of leg lifting, kicking and foot work. Disc #1 has only 3 segments with standing activities but a lot of lifting and kicking of the legs.

I am also surprised by the introduction of props. First, there was hand weights (substitution of household items was suggested by somewhat impractical). Then came the long towel, obviously one of her own promotional products. I substituted a kitchen towel. On disc #2, you will suddenly be asked to..."Take out your large ball and small ball."

"What large ball and small ball?!!!", was my first thought. Now, you are introduced to Mary Ann's 6 inch ball and 2 inch ball for about 1/4 of the disc. If you are going to require props, they should come with the disc...or a disclosure statement should be clearly stated with the DVDs...maybe on the cover of the DVD box.

Fortunately, I did have hand weights and a towel of about the right size; so, I can use disc #1...at least 80% of it. As for disc #2, it is almost worthless for me, because I have limited use of my legs; and that disc is mostly standing and lower body activities...none of which I could do without extreme pain and great risk to myself.

I didn't rate this set any lower than 3 stars, because most folks are not handicapped like myself. Mary Ann has a comfortable style of speaking and her instructions are easy to follow. The exercises are effective, IF you can do them. Unfortunately, I will be limited to using disc #1 from now on.

I bought this CD for my parents who are in their nineties. They intend to share it with their Activities Director in the Assisted Living facility where they live so others can benefit from it as well. It is such a good program for balance, joint range-of-motion, and stretching. My parents feel they can do many of the exercises on the CD which encourages them in exercise as there are many fitness activities they can no longer do.

I like this workout because it really does work out all parts of your body without killing you. I would recommend this to anyone, not just seniors.

I BOUGHT THIS FOR MY MOTHER WHO IS 83. SHE'S VERY ACTIVE, BUT THOUGHT THE EXERCISES WOULD HELP HER PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY. SHE COULD EASILY DO THEM, BUT UNFORTUNATELY HAS TOO MUCH TROUBLE OPERATING THE DVD PLAYER ITSELF. MY SISTER, WHO HAS RA, ALSO THOUGHT IT WAS A NICE EXERCISE REGIME THAT SHE COULD DO. SHE'LL PROBABLY END UP WITH THE DVD.

DVD was great. Exercises can be adapted according to abilities so it's not too stressful. Once first level is accomplished you can move to the next level.
