Instructor Lisa Stone developed this physically demanding but easy-to-follow prenatal exercise program during her own pregnancies. She begins the 57-minute tape by going over the ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) safety guidelines in detail, and then begins the 44-minute workout with a warm-up filled with familiar steps: step-touch, hamstring curls, grapevine. Stone's three 7-minute step segments are conducted with several other pregnant women in the background, including one in her ninth month who demonstrates versions of all the exercises without a step. The lower-body conditioning is done with the step or a chair, and an exercise band would be helpful. She conducts the abdominal work on the floor and includes Kegels and gluteal work, followed by cool-down stretches and relaxation. Stone's tape has a visual twist: instead of the usual sterile studio, she taped her workout in a huge room with hardwood floors and an enormous (unlit) fireplace. After the workout, the group gathers for a Q&A with an informative (if stiff and overrehearsed) ob-gyn on the benefits and limitations of exercise during pregnancy.
