2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The cover and text are nicely designed, and the writing is clear, concise. But the "secrets" aren't really secrets, and the advice consists of commonsensical, everyday things that you could come up with yourself. I found most of her suggestions to be useless; other "tips" have been discussed in other books in more depth and detail than these pithy...

Fit from within is a must read for everyone trying to lose weight and keep it off. It is not a regular diet book; actually it is far from a diet book, as it tells you not to diet but to eat as a healthy person. There are no menus, recipes or success stories but there is plenty of good advice that will provide you with everything you need to know to change your body and your life. To let go of the diet mentality and start eating as a healthy person is an important message in this book. You do this by eating three meals a day while sitting down, eating good delicious food that you enjoy, in portions that will satisfy your hunger, and making water your beverage of choice. But remember healthy people do not stuff themselves with salty greasy fast food! The author guides you to realizing your spiritual self and surrendering your life to God to be able to come to grips with your life and your eating habits. Don't worry, no breaching here, but do give thanks before and after meals! Another focus of the book is on living a good quality life all the way and not postponing your life till you reach your target weight. Stay centered in today, wear clothes that you like in your current size, groom yourself like a racehorse, develop your mind and talents, laugh and play and get plenty of sleep. As for exercise, walk more, join a friendly gym or discover yoga, don't do too much too soon or it will backfire! Above all be patient, this has to be for the long haul. As the author puts it " If you want only a different body, and not a different way of life, you can't expect the body changes to last, because there will be nothing to sustain them. In other words, you can't just lose weight and go to business as usual without becoming overweight as usual. This has to be for the long haul."

5.0 out of 5 stars My Best Friend, April 9, 2002

This review is from: Fit from Within: 101 Simple Secrets to Change Your Body and Your Life--Starting Today and Lasting Forever (Hardcover)
This book has become my best friend. It supports and guides me in my decisions, it cheers me in my smallest and most grand accomplishments, it encourages me to be kind to myself. It offers me practical advice that really works. I love this book as I would a dear friend, and I recommend it sincerely to anyone who is not 100% accepting of the way she feels, looks, or thinks she is perceived in the world.

I recommend it also as an alternative to protein diets, low-carb diets, special supplements, and other diet gimmicks. This is about real life and real food and living in the real world. It is really a helpful book.

4.0 out of 5 stars One book may not be enough for some, July 8, 2003
This review is from: Fit from Within: 101 Simple Secrets to Change Your Body and Your Life--Starting Today and Lasting Forever (Hardcover)
Reading this book reminded me of all the titbits of wisdom I have gleaned from many books over the years regarding overcoming eating problems and getting back to "normal" eating and "normal" weight. Those that come to mind include: Twelve Steps for Overeaters (L. Elisabeth), The Seven Secrets of Slim People (Vikki Hanson, Shawn Goodman), Fat is a Feminist Issue (Susie Orbach), Feeding the Hungry Heart (Geneen Roth), The Goddess Diet (Larrian Gillespie), Intuitive Eating (Evelyne Tribole, Elyse Rech) etc. Reading the other reviews, I can see there seem to be two main views - either 1) this book is great or 2) this book lacks something. As someone with long-term eating problems (over 25-years' worth!), my advice to prospective readers/purchasers is this. If you do not have a big issue with eating and/or being overweight, this may be the perfect book for you to get back on track. But if you have had long-term eating problems, one book may not necessarily be enough, it may be better to read this as well as a selection of books on related topics and work slowly step by step in your own time and in your own way towards your goal. Becoming fit from within is a very personal issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Only Weight Loss Book You Need to Read, July 17, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Fit from Within: 101 Simple Secrets to Change Your Body and Your Life--Starting Today and Lasting Forever (Hardcover)
Of all the diet and fitness magazines and books I have in my house, this book is the most informative, inspiring and thought-provoking. Moran challenges us to accept and honor ourselves in the present moment in order to prepare ourselves for the changes that lie ahead. It really is about the mental and spirital journey that comes with trying to lose weight. I especially appreciate her mother wit, honesty and light-heartedness. Everytime I read another chapter, I feel like someone has finally heard me and offering advice for real people with real lives. She advocates for being patient with ourselves, making the weight loss process as comfortable as humanly possible, and making the journey just as much a mental and spiritual thing as a physical one. With Moran's advice, I feel inspired to take the best care of myself as possible even though I am not at "goal weight" at the moment.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Fit from Within: 101 Simple Secrets to Change Your Body and Your Life--Starting Today and Lasting Forever (Hardcover)
If you have a weight loss problem, either recent or a long time in the making, please buy this book. I, like other people, have bought almost every weight loss book on the market. I was desperate to lose weight and would try any new idea that was waved in my face. After 20 years of being overweight, I have finally found solace in Victoria Moran's lovely words of wisdom. For the last few weeks, my binges have ceased, I eat better and my soul is healing. I no longer have the urge to turn to food to make me feel better. I've actually lost a few pounds already without feeling deprived. And because I feel better about myself physically, emotionally and spiritually, that goodness is spilling over into other areas of my life. So, please buy this book to get on the path to healing yourself. I carry it with me everywhere so I can refer to it often. It's like having a wise and sensible friend with me at all times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never fails to inspire!, July 3, 2002

This review is from: Fit from Within: 101 Simple Secrets to Change Your Body and Your Life--Starting Today and Lasting Forever (Hardcover)
Fit From Within is always on my bedside table. I like to read a chapter or two before I go to sleep and it never fails to inspire me. This book should be required reading for anyone who has ever had a problem with weight, body image or self esteem. Victoria's tips are wonderfully nurturing. It's a pleasure to be spoken to on a deep soul-level rather than having another nutty diet shoved in your face.

4.0 out of 5 stars good advice but nothing new, September 13, 2003
By A Customer
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I Like Victoria Moran's books, and bought this one because I wanted advice and ideas about getting fit. Although the book is filled with a lot of ideas , I thought that they lack originality. I would recommend this book to somebody who's never read a fitness article or a diet book, but somebody looking for fresh input this book alone wouldn't be enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun and Informative Book to Read about Losing Weight, June 29, 2002
By
This review is from: Fit from Within: 101 Simple Secrets to Change Your Body and Your Life--Starting Today and Lasting Forever (Hardcover)
I checked this book out at the library before I bought it. I have been burned too many times with weight loss books and weight loss products. Therefore I was wary of buying another
weight loss book.
This book Fit From Within is different. It's as if the author
lived in my skin and knows what I've gone through. One of the
biggest challenges for guys is gaining inches around the stomach.
It just creeps up on you.
I have lost weight and am losing inches since reading Fit From
Within, but more importantly I'm less afraid about what to eat
and less worried about how I look.
I guess I'm becoming "fit from within". Anyway, this is a
great book and I recommend it for everybody!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent contribution for people with eating disorders., May 25, 2002
This review is from: Fit from Within: 101 Simple Secrets to Change Your Body and Your Life--Starting Today and Lasting Forever (Hardcover)
As a psychotherapist and author (Embracing Fear, HarperSanFransisco) who works with clients with eating disorders, I want to thank Victoria Moran for this book.

Fit from Within is a powerful message of sanity and clarity in the midst of our eating disorder society. "It is ultimately not about food," I tell my clients again and again. "It's about creating a respectful and compassionate relationship with yourself." Ms. Moran's book could be the handbook for learning how to do just that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, December 1, 2005
This review is from: Fit from Within: 101 Simple Secrets to Change Your Body and Your Life--Starting Today and Lasting Forever (Hardcover)
I love this book. It's not really a diet book but a book that teaches you to change your attitudes toward food, your body, and your life. I found it inspiring and I have read it over and over again. Victorian Moran writes in a heartfelt and clear way. A must read for overeaters and people who have issues with food.
