Editorial Reviews

Review

""The authors, doctors all, explore the merits of physical activity pass the 50-year mark, providing plans and fine-tuning existing programs.
Regardless of age, say the authors, everyone should feel the exhiliration of exercise and derive the health benefits from a solid workout. They understand it's never easy to start: You have to get motivated, find time, assess risk and safety issues and develop an individualized plan. Since this can be daunting, the authors start from the beginninggetting started, then preparing, acting and maintaining the program. They stress the importance of keeping things interesting and challenging, and they give special emphasis to lifestyle changes that use everyday activities to help you keep fit: take the stairs, walk the dog, forget drive-up windows, don't use anything remote. Stage by stage, the authors provide the mental, emotional and behavioral skills necessary to keep active, and the workbook format is a useful tool.
A simple, encouraging guide to maintaining fitness after the age of 50.""

5.0 out of 5 stars Any over-50 person should have this basic guide., November 6, 2006
This review is from: Fitness After 50 (Paperback)
No prior level of fitness is presumed in order to use FITNESS AFTER FIFTY: ADD YEARS TO YOUR LIFE AND LIFE TO YOUR YEARS. And it's not even necessary to follow a single program of exercise to use this, either: it's a self-paced workbook manual which imparts the basics of after-50 fitness, from asking questions of a doctor and exercising safely to adapt an activity regimen to a medical limitation. From aerobic benefits and how to explore them to enlisting friends in a program to add support, any over-50 person should have this basic guide.

This book was just what I needed. Easy to read and understand. It has given me the motivation go and get busy. Getting more fitness into my daily routine was deemed necessary as I am seeing too many folks who are overweight and getting diabetes and losing their ability to stay independent. Strength is failing. Balance is failing. Endurance is weakening. I do not want to do down that road myself and this book has show me that those negatives can be avoided by working on my personal fitness. I really liked the book.

I got this from the library but it was such a good workbook I bought it. It has the best chapters on changing behavior and also a very good balance of lifestyle and exercise changes.
