From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up - Fifty-six short chapters discuss behaviors that maintain fitness and health, provide information on getting started on exercising, fundamentals of various types of exercise, and problems related to fitness efforts. Numerous types of activities are explained, some with more clarity than others. Warm-ups relating to some popular sports are described. A paucity of photos or diagrams may limit understanding of some descriptions of exercises. Average-quality black-and-white photographs are included only in the section on "getting into shape." The writing varies from simple sentences to very complex information, making readability uneven. Text-heavy sections are often relieved by inserts giving quick tips or interesting facts. The text is often repetitious, especially in determining maximum heart rate. Frequent grammatical errors, poor language usage, and typos also appear. The greatest value of this guide is in its explanation of why one should get fit and the ways to accomplish that goal. - Janice C. Hayes, Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro
