I bought a Total Gym 1500 from Amazon over three years ago and have used it faithfully two or three times a week every since. I don't know what the difference is between the 1500 and the Fitness Quest, but they look the same, so I assume they are quite similar. We have dedicated a room of our home to also accommodate free weights (with dumbbells and barbell), weight bench and a recumbent bike, that we still prefer for some exercises. So, we don't use the Total Gym for all we could use it for, but we love it for several exercises. For "Pull Downs", I add a 25# plate to the sliding bench to provide extra weight.

We keep the unit set up so it's extra simple to use, especially since I do all of the exercises in the highest position. My wife uses a lower position, but she does her exercises in one position also. Changing the position (load) involves removing a pin, sliding the upper fitting up or down and replacing the pin, very simple. Motion of the Total Gym is very smooth, the handles are comfortable and allow a wide range of movement adding a lot of flexibility to the way you stress specific muscle groups.

Except for a small tear in the stitching of the bench cover that I carelessly did with a sharp belt buckle, the unit looks and functions like new in spite of the hard use we have given it!

To be honest, I had very low expectations. After all, the other Total Gym systems are over $600. I thought this would be lacking. I saw one in Academy and the cover was torn and it looked terrible. I expected to use it until it broke and then I would be stuck with it. However, it's been great. It does come with a wing attachment which is useful for pullups or even to put your feet in for inverted crunches. In the manual, there is a number to call for replacement parts, so even if there is a problem, the company is still there to help you. My only complaint is that the handles move around. It's like a nylon strap with a tube around it so it takes some adjusting. There are quick connects on the machines so I suspect that I'll be able to change out the handles without issue.

This review is for the Total Gym Achiever, same as the 1100 confirmed, the base line model, and these cheaper models have 1/8" steel assembly brackets stronger than the xls 1/16" thinner wheel assembly brackets, thicker hitch pins at 5/16" than xls 1/4" bender hitch pins of the xls, and readily rebuildable with heavy duty rollers through Huck Products, ....bought mine for $80 clearance from a department store which originally tried to sell it at $249, and it sat there for weeks $199 with 40% clearance making it $120 till I noticed a bigger percentage clearance sale one evening of 60% off($80), I was skeptical cause I am used to lifting free weights, sit ups, push ups, I even have a suspended bar I am trying to achieve at least one pull up till I can work up to more, but warm ups are hard for me, guess I am lazy, but this total gym is helping just a week in, plus I have seen the commercials full well knowing they use the top of the line model, it is really a great piece of equipment as a base line unit, for what I paid, and best of all I am using it for leg conditioning, doing squats is really rehabiliting my pulled knee tendons which are slowing springing back into shape to hold my knee together correctly. I am hoping to experiment with the leg attachment single strap for leg exercises of some other sort, will figure it out when I really get into a routine with this.Read more ›
