Don't expect too much,

I wanted something that would give me a bit of a work out at my desk. My concern was workout first and then frills after that. I chose this because people said it was quite. I have no other "step" machine to compare that to, but mine does definately have a squeak to it. The noise won't shatter glass, but it does get annoying after a while (I use it for 30 minute stretches).
The computer thing that comes with it does not work. I wrote the company and finally got another. That one doesn't work either. This is a frill and is not enough for me to send the whole unit back for. Would be nice to know how many steps I take or how many calories I am burning, but it is not critical. The unit also came with a broken stopper at the end of one of the feet but it does not affect my using the machine so again, is not critical. When I contacted the customer service department about the defects, they did not respond the first time. I had to write them again and then I got a response asking me questions I had already answered in the first 2 emails. Not very customer service oriented. Overall, the unit works and that is tha main thing (and apparently, the only thing).

The machine is very quiet and the construction is solid so it should last for many years. I like the fact that it also tells you how many calories you burn -- the calory-burned count is more motivating than the number of steps taken!

good and solid...so far,

First thought, when I took it out of the box, was how sturdy it felt. After the easy instructions were followed it was put together in a flash (not that there is much to do at all). In all fairness, I don't use the counter at all. I just use it for a timed cardio device, I am not looking at the numbers.
I use it everyday and it works. Would recommend.

Very noisy, jerky stiff motion,

I hate using this thing. It not only makes a ton of noise, and I have sprayed it liberally in all areas using a quality dry lubricant made specifically for exercise equipment, but the motion is stiff and jerky no matter how much you adjust the knob. It also has a tendency to tip backwards if you happen to not have your feet all the way forward on the treads. I wish I had saved the packaging so I could return it. I also wish I had seen these latest negative reviews before I bought and not only that I paid way more just a few weeks ago than what it costs today. Just a totally disappointing experience no matter how I look at it. Shame on companies like Fitness Quest for putting such garbage out on the market and taking people's hard earned money away from them for nothing in return. I'll be taking this along on my next Goodwill run. If I had to say anything positive about this item it would be that it looks nice and you can use it barefoot.

Nice but squeaky,
By

I have been using my XL Stepper for a month or so. I am pleased that it is very solid, sturdier than the mini stepper it replaced. That stepper had a cable that broke; this stepper is designed without a cable, so it does not have that "weak link." The step and calorie counter has worked fine from day one.
The only complaint I have is that this stepper has squeaked badly since soon after I got it. I have sprayed it liberally with WD-40, but the problem persists. Occasionally it goes through a few minutes without squeaking, but most of the time it makes noise. Overall I am happy with this device. It helps me get regular exercise, improving my heart's health and keeping my waistline under control. Update April 8, 2008: After a few months, I finally tried a teflon lubricant from a bicycle shop. Applying this to the bolts is very effective in eliminating squeaking. I have found that an application every month or two is adequate.

I just recieved this product Monday April 16 on my Birthday. the instructions are simple. I have used this for 10 to 20 minutes a day, it is quiet, only a lite swoosh, barely noticable. the meter works accurately ,but the generic batteries need to be replace by fresh new batteries. The first day I used The Fitness Quest XL Stepper, I felt a burn in my thighs and calves, so, I know it is working. I also add ankle weights (2) 1.5LB each and (2) 3Lb each dumbells.
The tension can be adjusted for long slow strides or short quick strides. It is an easy storage, and That is what I like about this stepper since I live in a small Apt., with my husband, daughter, and a cat with very little or no storage.

It works,

When I purchased the fitness quest xl stepper, I did not expect much because not only I thought it was too affordable but I was overall pessimistic. however, I started using it the day I received it from the mail and at the end of that week, my jeans fitted more loosely. I used to say the people who write those positive reviews are paid to do so but I am genuinely satisfied with it. Although, it does make a squicky noise from time to time, it does not bother me because I use it as I am watching TV. To me, it was money well spent.

I just needed a basic stepper to use in front of the TV, not space consuming. It works really well, and has a simple screen that monitors the calories, time, etc. Works for me!

This stepper is definitely good for you if you are looking for a light cardio workout. With regards to working out the thighs and calves, it is painful at the time when you are using them the most. However, the next day I must admit I felt no discomfort whatsoever; this may also come from the fact that I work out regularly though. Again, this is a good workout tool; especially for beginner exercisers.
With regards to the product, it comes to you assembled. The only thing you have to do is connect the heart monitor/timer. Before buying this product, I read negative reviews about the batteries so I simply placed my own batteries in the timer; I have had no issue with the battery life. There is a small squeak as you step up and down, but it is not distracting whatsoever. The timer, on the other hand, chooses to come on whenever it wants to but I personally do not use it anyway so it does not hinder my workout. Also, the product comes with a booklet filled with recipes and a diet plan. There is also a workout plan attached. Basically, this is a fairly decent product. Mainly, I would say it is for beginners and works better when you are using the product for a light cardio workout. I definitely enjoy it and it gets the job done. It is not compact but can fit in a corner if it must. With this product, you are getting what you have paid for (which is a decent price all things considered).
