Fitting & Pattern Alteration: A Multi-Method Approach...This guide provides hundreds of clear illustrations with concise descriptions of fitting issues and easy-to-follow directions to resolve them using several methods. The authors cover virtually every fitting aspect of the human body, including the special problems presented by those of us who may have physical problems that translate into badly fitting garments, from neck to ankle.
Anyone frustrated with the results of their own apparel projects needs this guide on their sewing room bookshelf.

This book has been used as a textbook. It goes into perhaps more detail about fashion than some home sewers are looking for. I appreciate the ability to see the necessary pattern alteration for just about ANY body irregularity. Example - the book shows the pattern alteration for prominent shoulder blades. It really has pretty much every possible fitting problem. I recommend taking this book out of the library first. If your library doesn't have it, they can probably get it through an Inter-Library Loan. You may not really need to own this book unless you are sewing for quite a few people. You might just want to copy a page or 2. It is a great book for sewers learning fitting.

First the good. This book has just about every type of pattern alteration you could imagine from hollow neck, cylindrical torso, narrow rib cage and on and on. I have never found a pattern alteration book with so many different types of alterations. Secondly, I'm an experienced seamstress and am on a mission for better fit via flat pattern alteration.

Extensive look at the measurements need for particular body/pattern issue. (You will need a partner to take some of these different measurements).

The book discusses the major pattern companies and how their patterns differ and are similar to the others.

It goes into detail the pros and cons of each alteration method.

The authors also point out a new method of alterations, the Seam Method. Unfortunately, there are no decent illustrations or photos to back this method up, or tell you how to do it fully. Do you do this on a muslin? Probably. Can you do this by yourself? I'm presuming you can't, especially if you are working on the back bodice.

In my book there were directions on how to do the pivot and slash method for every alteration but maddeningly there was few direction on this great Seam Method, just a lousy grainy illustration. So does that mean that one can only do the Seam Method on certain alterations?

My book came without section headers and other key pieces of information. Turns out that the publisher did not put these vital pieces of info in and the editor/proofreader did not catch the mistake until too late. So if you get this book you might want to check for section headers, other info and make sure you can understand it all.

There were also concepts like uneven and even amounts of change. I have no idea what this means.

I bought this book used through Amazon so I did not pay full price. The book is excellent and worth the full price. There is a ton of good and usable information. I have been sewing for years and I learned a lot of new information in this book. If you are seriously interested in garment fitting, this is the book for you.

I have a number of other books on fitting, and absolutely none of them come anywhere close to this book. Save your money and buy only this one book to help you custom fit your clothes properly (it is not cheap but is definitely worth the investment). The authors explain what good fitting clothes actually are (I have never seen this anywhere else), they explain body types and compatible clothing, how to fit a sloper and different ways to test a commercial pattern against your custom, well-fitted sloper (and the advantages and disadvantages of each approach). They then break down possible fitting problems into specific body areas and show what the wrinkles will look like that indicate what fitting problem is actually present. Then they explain what causes the fitting problem, what other areas of the body are affected by that fitting problem, and then 3 different methods of altering your sloper or commercial pattern to accommodate the body. If you want to sew your own clothes then you'll want them to actually fit you better than RTW clothing or you are wasting your time. This book is a gem and worth every penny. It's a real keeper.

I purchased this book used but it looks like it was never opened until now. The author provides different methods for making the same alteration on a garment and includes every imaginable figure variation. This book includes information concerning how figure variations can be counterbalanced requiring other alterations. This is an excellent reference book in my sewing library and because our bodies change over time I imagine I will be referring to different sections in the book as the years march on.

This book is a great resource for doing pattern fit and alterations. It is a text book, but there are great illustrations and it helps to keep on hand if you don't do the alterations a lot. When you need to do some, it is a good tool to refer to.
