Book Description

Division of the past into convenient "periods" reflects more expediency than reality. Although pivotal events may be chosen to demarcate phases of historical or literary activity, the divisions tend to obscure the actual gradations and overlapping that occur. The decade of the 1920's--particularly in the United States--came closer to having a sharply defined uniqueness than most recognized periods. World War I inflicted a mortal blow upon the comfortable old world of European culture. The stock market crash in October, 1929, extinguished forever the bright lights and levity of the twenties. In the grim darkness of the Great Depression that followed, nothing survived of the madcap period except memories that took on an almost legendary aura.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a great supplement, but you need to read the novel!!, April 25, 1999

This review is from: Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby (Cliffs Notes) (Paperback)
I can't appreciate people commenting on just how helpful the cliffs notes are, especially concerning Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. For those who actually read the novel, and aren't slacker short cutters, the cliffs notes do a great job of gaining a better, more well rounded understanding. So, if you've read the book and are seeking some extra help or further knowledge, check it out!

5.0 out of 5 stars A book outstanding and inspiring, June 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby (Cliffs Notes) (Paperback)
The book The Great Gatsby was so awesome. I read the novel and saw the movie. It was extraordinary even though there was some confusing parts in the book when it changes from one subject to another. The book is advice for society, "Don't live for the past, live for what is to come for you in the future." Unlike what Gatsby did trying to get Daisy back and was unsuccessful. I recommend the book to everyone especially juniors who are going to read it.ENJOY!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars The notes were adequate...nothing spectacular., March 16, 1999

I didn't like the fact that there were no chapter summaries. There were just commentaries on each chapter. Not extremely helpful.
