Putting Modernism Together by Daniel Albright
Putting Modernism Together by Daniel Albright
In Putting Modernism Together, the author argues human culture can best be understood as a growth-pattern or ramifying of artistic, intellectual, and political action. Going beyond merely explaining how the artists in these genres achieved their peculiar effects, he presents challenging new analyses of telling craft details which help students and scholars come to know more fully this bold age of aesthetic extremism. Format: Paperback
F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is certainly one of the most important, enjoyable American novels of the early 20th century. In his study of The Great Gatsby, Nicolas Tredell first provides historical, biographical and literary contexts to help the general reader gain an understanding of influences on The Great Gatsby. With this completed, Tredell examines Fitzgerald's structure, style and form, leading to interesting discussions of the novel's chronology and the author's use of rhetorical devices like aposiopesis. After, he considers at length six major topics of the novel: "Romanticism," "America: Dream and History," "America: The 1920s," "Money," "Sexuality and Gender," and "Appearance and Reality." Tredell concludes his study with commentary on influence and adaptations.

Although there are many laudable features of Tredell's study, some of the elements of this study make it informative and interesting. For example, Tredell concludes each chapter with intelligent discussion questions, he includes a well-developed annotated bibliography and a glossary for quick reference. Most of all, however, his analysis keeps the novel central and leads to a much deeper, more comprehensive understanding of a complex work.

This study is suitable for teachers, students and admirers of The Great Gatsby. It is worth much more than its price.
