I haven't read anything else by Joely Black, but this was a great short story. I felt engaged in the world of the Five Empires immediately, wondering what the great experiment was going to be. There's a definite D&D flavor throughout the story, but it doesn't pander to the rule set or defined worlds. It's more the sense of being a rich world where others have gone before and you have the pleasure of coming along as well.

According to her website, this is going to be something of a serial story, so I will definitely be looking for more.

Quick intro for the series. World at war with each other. A kinda of a cold war situation has arose. Assassin Guild was formed to control the outbreaks of violence in the realms.

Now apparently another realm has developed a doomsday device in order to control everything. Not so fast, a new hybrid of assassin is developed, and it is amazing and powerful....

Great way to set up the series
