From the 1950s to the 1980s, before the 45 was replaced by the CD, and then in the 1990s, when grunge became the rage and 45s enjoyed a resurgence in popularity, 45 record–sleeve design combined photography, illustration, color, and typography with innovative bravado. For this reason, vintage 45 record sleeves today are sought-after collectibles by music buffs and designers alike.

About the Author
Spencer Drate and Judith Salavetz are award-winning creative directors, designers, authors, curators, and packagers specializing in music and pop-culture books. Their many published works have covered diverse subjects within these genres: film animation and special effects, movie and rock posters, rock photography, graphic and Web design, and typography. They have designed for artists such as U2, Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground, Leonard Cohen, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ramones, Talking Heads, The Pretenders, Joan Jett, and Bon Jovi. Drate was a four-time judge on the Grammy music packaging committee, co-designed the Grammy Award–nominated album package Talking Heads: Fear of Music, and wrote 45 RPM, the first visual history book on the 45 record sleeve. They both live and work in New York City.

What a great coffee table book. It's a wonderful ride on a 45 RPM cover sleeve time machine. Nice to see the sleeves of songs from the past and some quite contemporary ones juxtaposed in this unique manner. A-1 job by Spencer Drate & Judith Salavetz.

This is an very expansive collection of 45 covers spanning decades ... it is beautifully and creatively put together, with discussions of the various art techniques used to create the works, and the impact this art has on the purchase of these records.
I would recommend this book to any art or music enthusiast - and it makes an incredibly cool coffee table addition :).

Many mourn the day the compact disc was born. Some because of the quality of the music as opposed to it on vinyl, some because of the shrinking of what used to be great cover art.
Bands had frequently spent much time seeking the best use of the visual arts to comment (or deliberately not comment) on their music. The point of the their efforts was to evoke a response in their audience. Spencer Drate and Judith Salavetz, visual artists themselves, released the book Five Hundred 45's at The Morrison Hotel in New York to much acclaim.
A study, or happy flip through, of this book brought me back to various places and times, also stirring up remembrances of running out and buying a great many of the singles selected for this volume. It was so much fun to flip through the racks of Sam Goody or the like nabbing 45s that covers struck your eye like a shiny diamond, or evoked an emotion you couldn't quite put your finger on from a band you had never even listened to previously. This book has it all - a shot of The Rolling Stones looking like Choir boys on the cover for We Were Falling In Love, to the debonair Frank Sinatra's A Swingin' Affair, to the stark plain-as-you see-'em stripped down Talking Heads' Love - Building on Fire, to the haunting cover for Scarling's Band Aid Covers The Bullet Hole.
