2.0 out of 5 stars Not sure why this book is praised.... February 16, 2013

First off, this is a really short story. Only 78 pages and that includes a free sneak chapter of another book. I read this story in less than two hours. I'd say at least ten percent of the story describes the family's Christmas tradition. Booooring. The characters are not well developed, the story illogically and suddenly concluded...... It was like even the author lost interest in her own plot and characters. I don't understand why other reviewers said this story was sweet. After years the "hero" reappears and tells the heroine she's going to marry him, and she complies. Why????? After he ignored her for years? After he was involved in drunken bouts and slept with who knows how many women? How is this romantic? He sounds arrogant and presumptuous to me. This is the second book I've read by this author and I've been very disappointed by both. I won't be reading anymore. I won't waste my time or money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it, love it, love it August 30, 2012

Found this book by accident and it is a treasure. I love how the author has repeated them throughout the book. It is really a sweet story of two childhood friends which makes you want to go back to your own youthful time in life. No lies or misunderstanding dialogues in the book which I really appreciate. Clean to let the teenagers read it. Cannot wait to check out the author's other book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too short December 6, 2012

WARNING - Spoilers!
Maybe I should have checked before I bought it, but this is really a short story, not the novel I thought it was. Great premise and good start, but the ending felt like a 'cop-out.' It was too hastily wrapped up and kind of felt like it came out of left field. The love interest just shows up after years of building a womanizing reputation to proclaim his love and marriage for his childhood sweetheart? I would have liked to see the connection between the main character and her love fleshed out much more. Now that would be a story I'd want to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars What an enjoyable read! August 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
A charming tale featuring a spunky heroine and noble hero whose love grows over the course of five Christmas seasons. Simply delightful! The vivid imagery transported me into another world. I loved tagging along with Gillian and Chad on their journey into each other's arms! Can't wait to read the next Karla Darcy novel.

1.0 out of 5 stars Vulgar and poorly developed June 20, 2013
By Ashley
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really disliked the ending. This supposedly virtuous girl agrees to marry the guy without even asking him about his recent reputation for sleeping around. It's very strange. Also, there is a lot of vulgar content. I found the last paragraph especially disturbing. The author tries to draw the reader in with seductive love scenes rather than with character development and plot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet, wonderful read August 29, 2012

I cannot say enough about The Five Kisses. Karla Darcy transported me back to England with the opening sentence. This is a sweet regency romance that follows the life up Gillian and Chad from childhood to adulthood. For a short story, the author did an amazing job of drawing me into the characters lives. Each was well developed and their stories told to completion. I fell in love with all of them, especially Gillian's father, who made me long to be Gillian. If you want a sweet, loving read, don't miss The Five Kisses. It will not disappoint.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good start but what happened? April 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoyed the start of the book as the two characters start off as young children but felt as if it got to the stage that the author felt it was time to finish the book and did so rather rapidly. You have Gillian the feisty little heroine and the Chad who turns into a cad! Would have liked to have seen the story develop after Chad reappears into her life! That didn't happen. The end was so abrupt that it had me wondering what the hell happened! He comes back into her life after having nothing to do with her for years and announces he loves her and has a special licence and she willingly complies. I would have liked for her to have made him try to win her love and respect and for the author to have developed the ending more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice but too short February 27, 2013
By Groange
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This story was well written with well developed characters. I enjoyed the author's references to Regency period details.

Although the two main characters, Gillian and Chad, spent lots of time together as children, there was very little interaction between them once Chad became an adult and left for London. Gillian never saw or heard from him save for a few minutes every few years when he would suddenly turn up out of the blue and then disappear again just as quickly. There was nothing in his behaviour (boozing and womanising by all accounts) when he was away to indicate any sort of deeper feelings for Gillian. Only the increasing intensity of each subsequent kiss shared hinted at something more than friendship but for me it wasn't enough.

Perhaps if the book had been longer, there may have been time for some actual romance between Gillian and Chad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet
Never thought I would like novellas but it seems I was wrong. It does not take 250 or more pages to tell a story. Sometimes it just takes a good storyteller. Enjoyed it very much.

More About the Author

Karla Darcy is a fiction writer as well as a professional researcher who has always adored Jane Austen and all things Regency. Raised in Chicago she always hoped she'd be hired to work for the Encyclopedia Britannica or at the very least get a job writing clues for Jeopardy. After college, she ended up at an advertising agency. She didn't get to do much research but luckily got to write the slightly salacious entertainment for the Christmas party and other events where the agency's ads were parodied. Her favorite time period was England during the Regency period so it was a no brainer when she decided to write romantic fiction. It came as an unfortunate circumstance that a history researcher didn't have a clue how to write a book. Thanks to the advice of her favorite bookseller she found and joined a chapter of Romance Writers of America. These generous women were eager to help her learn the craft of writing and it wasn't long before she got the hang of weaving elegant stories of love in the Regency era.

Five Things you might like to know from an interview with Karla:

1. I can count to ten in five languages.
My father loved to learn funny sayings in other languages but the only thing I can remember is how to count.

2. I can recite all of the presidents in order from memory.
My family had a friend who took a Dale Carnegie memory course. One night at dinner he taught us how to memorize the presidents. I got an A in high school History class when the teacher challenged the class to recite them in order.

3. My secret guilty pleasure is watching the Ninja Warrior TV show.
Not the American version but the Japanese version. Even though it has English subtitles, the constant screaming by the Japanese announcer just adds to the whole experience. When you talk about real men, doing impossible feats of strength and not being muscle bound, it doesn't get any better than this. I'd prefer if a few more of them ran the course shirtless.

4. If I couldn't be a writer I'd want to be a radio announcer.
I worked in an advertising agency for years and did a couple of voice over commercials and really got a kick out of it. I have a raspy deep voice that sounds great on the radio and in the dark.

5. I am the world's worst procrastinator especially when I'm on deadline.
Unfortunately I do my best work when I'm up against a really short deadline. Adrenaline kicks in and somehow I get it done because I have a built in barometer that tells me just how much time I need to get something done.
