The paper quality is good.

Much to my surprise, BOTH of these also lost the black binding on the side, and the pages started to come out of the notebook.

These notebooks are fine I think.

I am a sophomore in college, and throughout all my years of middle, junior, and high school; I have always preferred composition books for taking notes over traditional spiral notebooks. I usually go to the dollar star or Wal-Mart at the beginning of the school year and stock up on four or five old-school composition books for a couple of dollars each, and I am set for all of my classes. However, when I saw that Mead manufactured compostion books in a variety of bright colors, I decided to give them a try--even though I could purchase five regular composition books for the price of just one Mead. At first, I was really happy. Not only was the paper a better quality than the thin, flimsy sheets that are found in your regular model, but with a thick durable poly cover instead of cardboard, I did not have to worry about it getting damaged. Or so I thought. After a few weeks of using the Mead composition book, the little black binding strip on the side began to come undone. I thought at first that I had just been a little rough with the notebook, so I decided to go back and buy two more. One of them I kept in my bag for note-taking, and the other I kept on my shelf for whenever I would need it. Much to my surprise, BOTH of these also lost the black binding on the side, and the pages started to come out of the notebook. Honestly, spending five dollars on a notebook that will just come apart when you can buy more than one of a better version for the same price is just ridiculous. Do yourself a favor and go to your local dollar store. ANYTHING you can find there will be far greater quality than these.

These notebooks are fine I think. Yes the black strip does come off but it really appears only to be for decoration and has nothing to do with the binding. So I just let it come off or tear it off and then it's fine. These that I ordered are nice and floppy and so they bend well and aren't stiff like most composition books. The binding has not come undone unlike other floppy composition books I've tried. I've been using them all semester and other than the black strip there have been no problems. Definitely my favorite so far.

I've used these comp books for years for keeping notes, task lists, "to dos", numbers, etc. They take alot of abuse and hold up well. Yep, the black strip comes off. 1/2" gaffers tape is the best thing to use. Take the black strip off and use one layer of gaffer's tape. Never did like the Moleskine books, I need something less priss. This also comes in bright colors, easy to find in a pile of paperwork.

Color Name: Purple Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The best thing about this notebook is that it does not have a spiral binding. Those things always seemed to have a bit of metal at the end which could be depended upon to snag a shirt or scratch an arm. The cover is plastic, therefore washable, also handy in case of leaking pens or spilled soda. The paper is generic school paper, college-ruled. It's thin and will probably yellow in a few years - if you ever have occasion to look at it again. The label on the cover boasts that the notebook lies flat, but that isn't true unless you open it in the middle, where the pages are bound in. I tried opening it from the front, the back, a third of the way in and out, and each time it flipped closed right away. One thing I actively disliked: there was no perforation in the sheets. The paper is bound in, and there it stays. If, for any reason, you want to clip a sheet, you'll have to rip it out or get a pair of scissors. Other notebooks (by the same company) have holes punched and perforations, so if you need to clip a sheet it's easily done and you can add the sheet to a looseleaf or a file folder, whatever you need. In this case, what you see is what you get. It reminds me of the notebooks of elementary school, except with a washable and colorful color. I'm not sure what niche this notebook fills best. It might make a good journal for someone who doesn't already use a computer for that purpose.

This notebook is standard-issue composition book, but with a crazy cover that's some kind of plastic. And it will hold up to bites, drops, and rain (though the interior, sadly, will not).

Where was this notebook when I was in college? Well, it's here now, and I am SOLD.

Not only that, but my kids will need a Sharpie to write over what I've designated (or to write their names, because it seems they need to write THEIR names on EVERYTHING) and they won't be able to just color on the cover. Except that there's no white box on the front.

Pages: permanently bound, just like with every other comp book on the market.

Downfall: it's no longer the inexpensive, easily justified notebook anymore either. So there's that. But...if you're a pro looking for a handy notebook, it's far less than the $20 I've shelled out for fancy-schmancy journals. So there's THAT.

Guess it depends how you're using it, what kind of budget you have, and whether you like the colors. :)

There are many uses for this Composition Book. It is very helpful to have handy for home, school, and office. The quality is good, and it's compact to fit in any canvas bag, or school bag, not requiring much space. In addition, it has several features to fit our needs. The durable plastic cover is an added bonus, to protect the paper inside, from accidental spills.

It contains 100 pages of college ruled paper, great for note-taking. I like the color, which conveys what I'm using this book for. I will be using it for my business, as I'm always writing important notes, and reminders.

In the near future, I will be ordering others to fit my needs for home uses, such as a log for bills. The pages are permanently bound in, which prevents from losing pages. In the past years, I had major problems with notebooks bound by wire, and lost pages after the paper around the wire tore. It lies flat, and isn't bulky, and is built strong. These notebooks were not available when I went through many years of school. That's my only regret. For my home & office, they are the perfect choice. Great notebook, good price! Highly recommended.
