Book Description

When Marty Francis got divorced, she vowed never to depend on anyone ever again. A successful real estate salesperson, she is content with her life. But Marty's settled existence is turned upside down by the appearance of a tall, dark - and soaking wet - man in coveralls. He's a handyman, making repairs at a house she is trying to sell, and his angry outburst ruins her deal. But she can't forget the house, and its attractive handyman. Each time she returns, another bit of repair is in progress - which would be great, except the constant turmoil is killing Marty's attempts to sell the house. Agreeing to meet with the owner's representative, Marty is startled and confused to find the handyman waiting for her. He is Will Hart, the man responsible for the work on the house. After a single lunch, he is also responsible for a lot of Marty's daydreams. But Will is a man with secrets of his own. Haunted by the death of his wife, he has buried himself in his work. Learning to live again, and love again, is a daunting task. When these two meet, sparks fly. But will they have the courage to fan the flames, and try to find the house and life of their dreams?

Christina F. York lives on the rugged Oregon coast. (20041201)

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Will is in the basement trying to fix the plumbing when Marty's clients turn on the kitchen faucet. His vocal reaction loses the sale for Marty, and although he subsequently apologizes, he unwittingly manages to put off other prospective customers for the fixer-upper as well. But Marty is drawn to the little house and agrees to help Will by suggesting how he can best showcase its appeal. Both are attracted, but neither is willing to make the first move to emotional entanglement in York's gentle second-chance-at-love, college-town romance. Further complications arise when one of Marty's clients proposes marriage to her just as Will walks by and when Marty discovers that the incorrigibly outspoken handyman is really the foremost real-estate developer in Eugene, Oregon. Close friends of both parties meddle as well, moving this leisurely paced tale along between real-estate office staff shenanigans and introspective moments for both parties. Lynne Welch

5.0 out of 5 stars Appealing romance, October 31, 2004
This review is from: Five Star Expressions - Dream House (Hardcover)
In Eugene, Oregon, Home Masters realtor Marty Francis escorts a couple to a fixer upper house only to have some maniac come out of the basement dripping wet and yelling. The sale fell through in Marty's mind because of the handyman. Marty informs George Lane, who is selling the house, that his handyman cost a sale and provided a few tips on making the place look better. George, used to corporate real estate, took the house on as a favor for his college pal Will Hart, who is selling it for the couple he considers his family.

George lectures Will. He also arranges a meeting between Will and Marty to discuss the house. Marty gives Will tips and he immediately acts on them. As they begin to fall in love, he sees her with a client Ralph Gordon. They care for one another, but not as lovers only friends. Will misinterprets their relationship and flees from Marty making it seem impossible for anything permanent to occur in spite of love.

This engaging real estate romance stars two delightful lead protagonists and a fine support crew especially her clients and her fellow workers at Home Masters except for one odious cheating creep who readers will want to see get his comeuppance. The romance is fun to follow as neither Marty (due to divorce from a runaway husband who left her with bills) nor is Will (whose wife died in an accident) ready for love (though their respective hesitations do not fully come across). Fans of second chance at love tales will enjoy visiting DREAM HOUSE.

3.0 out of 5 stars cute story, March 6, 2005

This review is from: Five Star Expressions - Dream House (Hardcover)
I felt that this story began slowly and then started to get interesting, only to end on a boring note. There was lots of daydreaming between the two main characters, but not enough conversation. Marty talked more "about" Will than "with" Will. I also think that the story ended too abruptly. The ending was building and building, and then all of a sudden it just stopped!! Overall, though, this was a cute, light, and easy read.
