Book Description

Five Star First Edition Mystery April 15, 2005
Criminal defense attorney Sandra Salinsky is hired to defend Kitty Fulton for the murder of Kitty's father, plaintiffs' attorney Phillip Parker. The case is more complicated than it first appears, since Parker was Salinsky's mother's best friend. Salinsky and her mother, Erma Townley, are law partners. Although Fulton claims she is innocent, Sandra soon learns that Kitty had millions of reasons to kill her father, and not all of them were about money. To make matters worse, Edgar Saul, the prosecutor from hell, is assigned to the case. Sandra and Erma put their heads together to try to figure out who really killed Phillip. It seems that everyone has a different story of the events on the night of the murder. One thing is certain, though, someone stole the victim's watch and ring, which could turn a murder into a capital murder, a death penalty offense. Sandra's greatest desire is to find the killer before her client is indicted and put to trial for capital murder. Before this case is over, Sandra will risk everything to solve a crime that leads into the very pillars of Galveston society, and put herself in danger to capture a killer who will take no chances in making her the next victim.

Susan P. Baker is a former Texas District Court judge, former criminal and family attorney, and a former probation officer. She is the past head of the Southwest Chapter of Mystery Writers of America, and a member of Sisters in Crime, Private Eye Writers of America, and the Authors Guild. She is married, the mother of two, and the grandmother of six children. Read more about Susan at www.susanpbaker.com. (20050401)

Editorial Reviews

Review

". . . colorful characters and a page-turner of a story."
-- author Jan Grape (20050201)

"...This entertaining legal thriller grips the reader more for the almost incestuous ties between the defendant, her defense team, and the prosecution-police side. The story is action-packed, but is character driven and the heroine realizes that as she digs deeper into life of the deceased the more personal it feels. Fans of a fine mystery will appreciate Susan Baker?s delightful DEATH OF A PRINCE."
--Iloveamystery.com, April 2005 (I Love a Mystery )

"Serviceable prose, a good story, and strong protagonists recommend this legal mystery to most collections. A former Judge, Baker lives in the Texas hill country."
--Library Journal, April 2005 (Library Journal )

"Baker has crafted a refreshingly straightforward whodunit. Multiple sleuths on parallel tracks, one breezy, one brassy, add spice."
--Kirkus Reviews, February 2005 (Kirkus Review )

5.0 out of 5 stars entertaining legal thriller, May 25, 2005
This review is from: Five Star First Edition Mystery - Death Of A Prince (Hardcover)
In Galveston, the police arrest Kitty Fulton in the murder of her father, attorney Phillip Parker, who fell from a balcony. Kitty hires former prosecutor turned defense lawyer Sandra Salinsky to defend her. Sandra quickly realizes that his client had numerous motives including a vast inheritance and had the means and opportunity to push her father following a party the night before.

The case is personal for Sandra as her mother and partner was the victim's best friend and her boyfriend his legal partner. Making the case more complicated for Sandra is that her former friend police Lieutenant Dennis Truman heads the investigation and he still considers her a turncoat for changing sides so he is uncooperative. Sandra quickly learns that those who attended the party at Phillip's home tell diverse stories of what happened that evening. Though the case that no nonsense prosecutor Edgar Saul lays out seems open and shut, Sandra believes Kitty is innocent, but to prove this seems impossible.

This entertaining legal thriller grips the audience more for the almost incestuous ties between the defendant, her defense team, and the prosecution-police side. The story line is action-packed, but is character driven and the heroine realizes that as she digs deeper into life of the deceased the more personal it feels. Fans of a fine mystery will appreciate Susan Baker's delightful DEATH OF A PRINCE.

I liked the mystery and I stayed interested. However, I wish there were more clues to the perp while reading. The guilty party, in my opinion, came out of the blue. I liked the writing style and grammar. I didn't have to go running to a dictionary with each page. Overall, I enjoyed the mystery.
