5.0 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining romantic mystery
This is a light-hearted mystery written with a wry, sardonic tone; "I don't think I'd have noticed if I'd run over someone, but I'm fairly sure I didn't because no one ever called me on it and there was no weird debris on my car the next day." The protagonist is entertaining, and misses a lot of clues, which left me in the enjoyable position of finally being able to solve...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great story but could've been better
I'm a sucker for romance and mystery. I thought such combination would create a page turner, but that was not the case. I felt the story was slow paced. Im usually a fast reader but this book wasn't one of my favorites. I loved the characters but everything felt dragged out until the last 3 chapters.

The protagonist is entertaining, and misses a lot of clues, which left me in the enjoyable position of finally being able to solve a murder mystery before the denouement. The romance is sweet and involves some Heyer-esque misunderstandings, with a nice HEA (or at least a HFN) ending. Definitely recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast, funny and furious, January 9, 2006
This review is from: Five Star First Edition Mystery - B. Quick (Hardcover)
B. Quick is a delightful combination of mystery, romance and humor with likeable characters in an all-too-real world.

The life of Professor William Shakespeare Yates is turned upside down one Halloween night when he accidentally rescues the object of his dreams, one Brian Quick, and finds himself accused of attempting to murder the man he just rescued.

While many of the problems and issues facing gay men are present, they take a back seat to Bill's main problems - getting on with life, falling in love, and trying to find out who tried to kill Brian so that he can go back to being an ordinary academic.

The dry wit that fills the book is delightful, and I doubt anyone will look at their sofa in quite the same way after reading this book.

I loved everything about this book, from the quirky main character to the fantastic plot and the fresh style of writing. Not sure why it's free. I would have definitely paid for it. I highly recommend it.

I loved this book. Well written, and with a protagonist I found adorable. Who is this author? I'd love to read more.

I really started off enjoying this novel, but whether it's because I wasn't in the mood for it or what, I found that after the first third, I began to become impatient with the characters and with the pace of the plot. I do enjoy character-driven novels in general, but so many of these characters annoyed me without being equally amusing that they just didn't "do it" for me. (I also found myself frequently wanting to shake Yates, the main character, and although I don't mind flawed "heroes," his particular flaws and character weaknesses bugged me.) It's the sort of book I probably would have found much cleverer when I was about 20 years younger than I am now!

I finally skipped to the last couple of chapters (after making it through 48% of the book) and read those, and it did have a sweet and satisfying end -- if somewhat gruesome for a couple of the characters -- and I liked the note that the novel closed on. The romance also had reached a sweet stage by then, which was nice.

I am keeping it on my Kindle and plan to go back and reread it sometime when I'm more in the mood for it. In my present reading mood, it just began to drag by about a third of the way through it.

Kindle formatting: Generally well written and well formatted.

the start of the book just killed me. the main character is so slow to react, with paragraphs of useless prose detailing his thoughts about what he saw, if it was real, then on to what people would think of him in a negative light for saving someone from drowning. The book isnt bad! just frustrating for a detail and action orriented person like me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a twisty turny thing., August 28, 2011
This review is from: B. Quick (Kindle Edition)
I had the opportunity to read this work some months ago when it was recommended by a friend. I found the characters to be people I could relate to and the plot a well executed mystery, with enough twists and turns to keep me reading it well past my bed time. Although the main character is gay as are several of his supporting cast, the romance parts of the novel are tastefully written and the characters are not societies stereo-types.

I recommend this book for anyone looking for an engaging mystery or anyone interested in a sweet romance in a small college town.

This mystery was very interesting and well written. I enjoyed it from begining to end. I'm going to keep my eye out for any sequels the author publishes.

5.0 out of 5 stars fun tongue in cheek amateur sleuth thriller, December 31, 2005
This review is from: Five Star First Edition Mystery - B. Quick (Hardcover)
Twenty-nine years old Bile College English Professor William Shakespeare Yates heads home in a storm when he nears one lane bridge that leads to the town Lythia Springs, Colorado. Before he can cross it he notices someone drops a bundle that appears to have contained a body off the bridge into the Nugget River. Unable to just keep going home, William dives into the icy waters and rescues student Brian Quick, the star of the professor's late night gay fantasies.

That same night Brian's friend Police Chief Tony Marssano gets a tip that William killed Brian and tossed him off the bridge. However, the live Brian tells Bill that William saved his life and that his roommate Chris Hogg drugged him and tried to kill him. When another student is found dead from an ax, once again Tony looks towards William as the culprit especially as evidence begins to pile up affirming he did it. Alas William must put aside his dreams of a university taboo about bedding a student in order to prove his innocence or else he may end up as the final act in a tragedy.

B. QUICK is a fun tongue in cheek amateur sleuth thriller that contains an intriguing triangle. The story line is driven by the antics of the Professor whose reward for saving Adonis is being accused twice as a killer. The interrelationships between William, Brian, and Tony are priceless as each has preconceptions of the others that in some ways cloud their judgment. Readers will be having fun with this lighthearted Rocky Mountain academic who-done-it.
