5.0 out of 5 stars IT WAS A BESTSELLER IN AUSTRALIA FOR A REASON!!!!, February 18, 2002

This album is an awesome work from the reasonably young group known as Motor Ace. Although their time together hasn't been lengthy, it's the last thing you can tell from their sound. I hate to classify them because I do not want take away from their talent, but they are somewhat like a mix between Coldplay and Radiohead... I was living in Australia when this album came out. All the songs released were instant hits (American Shoes, Death Defy, Hey Driver, etc) but my personal favorites are Siamese and Hey Driver. I can't explain what a good album this is and it's a shame that Nor America wasn't exposed to it for whatever reason.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars for Five Star Laundry, October 8, 2005
This review is from: Five Star Laundry (Audio CD)
This is rock out of melbourne, australia at its finest..its a pity that the guys called it a day after their most recent album, Animal but this is a first album that deserves far more credit and listens than it has been given. If you don't love at least 8 tracks on this album including Siamese, you don't love good music. Period.

I say, Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Star Laundry is 5 Stars, October 17, 2003

Motor Ace are a band from Melbourne, Australia. They haven't been together for very long, but for the past few years, have released 2 excellent albums: "5 Star Laundry" and "Shoot This". Though I did not know of them until the airplay of "Carry On" from their second album, I find "5 Star Laundry" is the better deal.
Commentry on songs:
- Hey Driver
- Death Defy - bagpipes in this one...apparently inspired by John Farnham's song. (I'm thankful that it doesn't sound it. :) )a song with attitude.
- 5 Star Laundry - love the interlude towards the end...especially when MA play live.
- Lorenzo
- Budge - slow, and haunting
- American Shoes
- Siamese - lyrical and melodic, Siamese is vocally a "tune-down" from "American Shoes" and "Chairman of the Board"...
- Chairman of the Board - excellent lyrics (and subject) and catchy sound. Definitely a highlight of the album!
- Freefall
- Enemies
- Criminal Past - lyrics are slightly more concise in this one...a crowd-pleaser.
- Money and Sympathy - a potentially great song - if not so long!!!!
Overall - great sound. Lyrics are a little bit hazy - difficult to guess what they're on about sometimes (but hey ambiguity appeals sometimes). Lots of groovy riffs/interludes/etc. See them live, if you have the chance.

I listen to this album almost every day during my commute home from work. I never get tired of it. My only criticism is that the very last track on the CD (Money and Sympathy) gets kind of repetitive toward the end. I often just switch it back to Track One instead of going to the next CD. There's an unaffected simplicity to the music which I think makes it classic. Note I said simplicity; it's not simplistic. There are some nice sophistications, like the guitar work on "Siamese", that decorate without being distracting.

I'm an American who's hooked on Motor Ace.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for Five Star Laundry!!, December 19, 2001

Now this is an amazing debut album from one of Australias top up and coming bands... If your not sure who they are well don't hesitate in just buying the album because if your into guitar driver alternative rock then you won't be dissapointed. The song "Death Defy" can be heard on the opening credits of the new Australian hit series The Secret Life of Us and it rocks.

If your into bands like Radiohead, Idlewilde, Smashing Pumpkins, then buy this album because you'll be able to say you were a fan before the rest of the world becomes one! Every song is a winner but my personal favourites are Lorenzo, Hey Driver and Siamese.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rocking Aussie Band!!, October 2, 2001
This review is from: Five Star Laundry (Audio CD)
Three words ... BUY THIS CD!

This is one of the best CD'S I've ever heard! The music is rocking and flowing well. The band reminds me a bit of 'Three Doors Down' but a bit heavier in the lead guitar in some songs; though I hate to compare American bands with Australian bands. These four guys are from Melbourne Australia are energetic and wild. The lead singer Patrick Roberson was just born to sing. I love every song on the 'Five Star Laundry'Album ! Five stars they difinately are!

The song 'Lorenzo' #4 was written some time in 1994. Vocalist Patrick Robertson says the song is about being stuck at home underage (when you look too young and you don't have fake ID) while everybody else is having a `good time'. Only when you get older do you realise it isn't all it was cracked up to be: "What's this myth said we'd have good times, well I can't seem to find my impulsive side". Revolver (NSW - 26.2.01) sums it up perfectly when they say, "...Lorenzo, with its questioning vocals easily manages to be beautiful and charming all in one. The kick line of ... 'Lorenzo Lamas got me lifting (...) weights for you' in the end shows the groups narcistic sense of humor! Gotta love it!

The band is featured in these other compliations if you can't get enough of 'em. 'Pepsi Chart Hits', 'Style Wars Promo CD' and 'Triple J's Five Alive' with unreleased material Acefall!

The hottest songs on this album are #1 Hey Driver, #3 Five star Laundry and #6 American Shoes .. and not to forget Lorenzo and Budge!! Thought the entire album is great! Do yourself a favour and buy this one! This isn't down under ... this is right on top! ...

5.0 out of 5 stars The best album i've bought for a long time, September 6, 2001
By

This review is from: Five Star Laundry (Audio CD)
I'd never heard of these guys until I was watching an episode of an Australian TV series one night,as soon as I heard the track over the opening title's I had one of those 'I have to know who this is by' moments, fortunatley the end credits supplied me with the band name, being a resident of England I jumped straight on line to Amazon's UK site and only got Motor Head and Ace of base, after a day of trapesing around every record store I know to no avail undeterred I went onto this site and found it and boy am I glad I did.
I would place this bands style somewhere between the finer moments of the Goo Goo Dolls and Everclear but with a slightly harder edge,I know i've placed them in esteemed company but they really are that good, from the first track till the last it does'nt let up there really is not one weak track on the whole album. The singers got a great voice, and the rest of the band really can play they have a big big sound.
I would say it's middle of the road rock (not cheesy) but they vary it very well some tracks rock from the start some start slow and then charge ahead and there's some great accoustic moment's (I was never to keen on the Goo Goo's when they sped things up) but this is just the right pace, slowed down and loud.
I don't know if these guys are big in the US but if they are'nt they should and would be,and if you like this sort of stuff and this is missing from your CD rack then you really are missing out.I hope these guys make it big but seeing as the charts in the UK are ruled by an endless stream of girl and boy bands they probably won't over here.
Please nice guys at Amazon put Motor Ace's name on the 'people who have bought this also bought this' section of some big bands album pages they deserve it they are a great band, and you'll sell loads.
