I like spiral notebooks because they flip back -- you can fold the cover around back and have the book take up half the space. I like three-ring binders for the flexibility; I can choose or print exactly the kind of paper I want. (I'm picky -- I use one paper for my to-do list, but a different kind for my writing.)

If you want the best of both worlds, you (that is, me) have three alternatives: 1) use a "disc" system like Levenger's Circa or Staples's Arc, 2) use a spiral- or comb-binding system and build your own notebooks, or 3) use the Five Star Flex Hybrid NoteBinder.

I actually have a spriral-binding system, and it works pretty well, but it's expensive and less flexible. The disc systems look nice but you have less flexibility (buy a $40 punch, and lose out on all the three-ring accessories out there).

So. Mead. The Flex Hybrid is the best choice, but it's not perfect. A notebook's gotta know its limitations.

You've got the flexibility and simplicity of a three-ring binder: Paper choices, ease of using a standard hole punch to put anything in it, simple archiving into standard three-ring binders, and lots of accessories if you're that type.

And you've got the flip-the-cover-around ease of a spiral notebook. (I've seen some comments like, "Oh, please, that's not important. But we all know it is, don't we. Else we wouldn't be here.)

So where does it fall short? A few small ways, but worth noting.

The cover is cheap plastic and feels that way. Great for a schoolkid for sure, but you won't be dazzling anyone in an office. (Then again, I don't care about that. You might.)

The bigger issue is the ring system. (I'll post a photo here if I can.

I am a college student who got tired of carrying big 1 inch binders or notebooks around for each class, and switching them out between classes, when I rarely got or needed papers in class. This note binder has given me one small thing to carry around to every class. I really like the style of rings it uses to hold the paper and folders. They are not loud like traditional metal rings (too loud to use much during a lecture) and they are very flexible and don't get bent in my backpack. I recommend this notebinder for anyone who needs the flexibility of a binder and the portability of a notebook in a small, quality package.

Great in concept, lacking in execution. Just another product where you are left wondering "did the folks who designed and manufactured this EVER bother to actually use it?".

Materials are good, included jackets are useful, sizing is good, etc.

However, the most important part - the rings - are poorly designed (flexible plastic) and executed. Paper and dividers hang up EVERY time you turn a page. The rings are made such that for loading large groups of papers you'll need to feed each of the three holes through a pointed, curved, flexible section of the plastic rings. A real pain.

Bottom line: if you are putting things in and out of this binder often, look elsewhere. And once in there, just turning a single page turns into a 4-5 second double-handed operation. If you are loading it up and then storing it for infrequent use, maybe this product would be fine.

This is a smart idea for a hybrid notepad-binder, as long as you don't need to add/remove paper to the binder frequently. This is a potential deal killer, because it has three non-metal (plastic?) D-type rings that have to be opened individually, and they open deep towards the bottom, on the right hand side of the D-ring. In other words, it is a pain to add/remove things. Silver lining, if you hate metal binder rings, you get non-metal material on this one.

If the above hasn't scared you away, this is a pretty practical way to combine multiple things into one. Because the D-rings are not metal and the fabric spine is not fixed material (that's what enables it to be convertible like a notepad), you have a lighter, more flexible (material wise) binder-notepad.

The whole thing is about 11.5 by 11 inches, and it comes pre-assembled with the following goodies (all are removable):

a) two open-faced semi-see-through pocket-sheets with a smaller closable mini-pocket (think envelope size) on the bottom (closable but not sealed, smaller things (eg business cards) may fall out). Regular paper is held in place by the pocket on the bottom and a top left side protector. With these, roughly the top half of the papers you put it are exposed on the front side

b) three semi-see-through plastic sheets that protect the paper on both sides and has a mini-tab on top for closing them in

c) sixty sheets (120 pages) of college-ruled 3-hole punch blank paper to write on

d) twenty sheets (40 pages) of graph 3-hole punch blank paper to write on

e) sticker with five white write-on stickers to use in the five Tabs (or use your own paper)

The colorful paper on the front you see in the pictures can easily be removed (or torn off) and recycled.
