Book Description

Five Star Science Fiction/Fantasy June 10, 2005
What does the dragon know? The kingdom of Everran is dying, razed by a dragon that came out of nowhere to burn its oil groves and devastate its vineyards and kill its folk. Everran was safe, prosperous, and contented, with peaceful lords, a strong king, and beautiful queen. What has it ever done to earn a curse? But legend says a dragon's coming always has a cause. If no enemy has bespelled the country, is there something wrong in Everran itself? Despite its prosperity and its peace and its royal couple who have not yet had a child? Soldiers cannot stop the dragon. There is no help in Everran's neighbors, and none in legend or history. Why has the dragon come? What does the dragon know? Answering its riddle will explain the ruin of a kingdom-and turn its ruler into something less than human but very much more than a man.

Sylvia Kelso lives in North Queensland, Australia. (20021201)

Editorial Reviews

Review

"From a darkly humorous tale of the power of words (Death and the Librarian) to a never-before-published response to events of September 11 (Ilion), Friesner's 12 stories illustrate the author's acutely sensitive vision of wonder in the everyday world... Known primarily for his 'Star Wars' novels... Zahn's short stories also deliver strong plots and memorable characters... Zebrowski's many novels (e.g. Macrolife) mark him as a visionary as well as a master of hard sf. The ten short stories collected in In the Distance provide a benchmark of his creativity... the author expands his concept of the human condition to embrace the stars. Part of Five Star's continuing commitment to showcasing the short fiction of the genre's most prominent author's, these three volumes belong in most libraries where short sf is popular."

"...Part of Five Star's continuing commitment to showcasing the short fiction of the genre's most prominent authors, these three volumes (Death and the Librarian and Other Stories/ Star Song and Other Stories/ In the Distance, and Ahead in Time) belong in most libraries where short sf is popular."

"Four more titles in Five Star's new series (God Is an Iron and Other Stories/ Generation Gap and Other Stories/ The Lady Vanishes and Other Oddities of Nature/ Suppose They Gave a Peace and Other Stories) of short fiction by noteworthy sf authors offer a variety of tales that illustrate the depth and staying power of the genre...Most of the stories in these volumes have only appeared in periodicals. Libraries wishing to augment their sf or short fiction collections should consider any of them."

"The exciting debut of a major new voice in fantasy. Read Sylvia Kelso: she''s great!"
-- Rosemary Edghill, author of Paying the Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Other Stories

"The arrival of a dragon spells doom for the land of Everran. As the creature destroys olive groves and vineyards and slaughters the people, only Harran the Harper possesses the riddle - give to him by the dragon itself - that might contain the key to ridding the realm of the monster. As Harran and King Beryx struggle to save their land, they realize that profound changes are inevitable, even should they succeed. Kelso's first novel brings new life to the ever-popular subject of dragons. Strong characters and a fully realized world combine with action and adventure to create a tale that will appeal to most fantasy fans."
--Library Journal, June 2005 (Library Journal )

"...Epic battles, magic, betrayal, courage, and love abound in EVERRAN'S BANE, as boys become men and a man learns how to be a true king. The weapon to kill the dragon has not yet been forged is the message learned after the first losses in battle. The search for an answer to the riddle takes Beryx and Harran from one end of Everran to the other, as they each must find the internal strength to manage, in Beryx's case, a frightened people, and to uplift their spirits with song in Harran's...a bit of humor to balance out the horror of the dragon's killing sprees...there are so many themes -- friendship, the nature of courage, what it means to be a leader -- intertwined within the core of this tale, that it would be a shame to miss it by not picking up this book. First time author Sylvia Kelso comes out of the chute with a fantastic tale of might and magic that's all heart in EVERRAN'S BANE."

5.0 out of 5 stars poignant and moving fantasy, June 25, 2005
This review is from: Five Star Science Fiction/Fantasy - Everran's Bane (Hardcover)
The Kingdom of Everran was a happy place where anyone who wanted to work could find a job and no family was homeless. The vineyards bring in enough money to keep the treasury full and the handsome king is beloved by his subjects, his military, and especially by his adoring wife. Everran's peace ended when the skybane ( a dragon) came.

No army can defeat it; no champion can kill it.To stop the ruin of his kingdom, King Beryx sends hearthbard Harran to the dragon's lair to ask what it will take to bring about a truce. Terms are agreed upon but the dragon gives more to the king when he says the "weapon has not been forged" that could kill it implying something not yet invented could. When a jewel disappears from the dragon's cave, it goes on a rampage destroying the capital and the surrounding areas. Banished from his own lands the king and his advisors seek the weapon that would end the life of Hawge the dragon not knowing the answer will cause the king a high cost he must pay in order to save his kingdom.

Not every adult fairy tale has a happily ever after ending, EVERRAN'S BANE is a poignant and moving fantasy in which the real hero must choose between giving up much he holds dear or losing everything to the dragon.. There are clues sprinkled throughout the tense plot that hint at what must happen to defeat the dragon, but the king and readers will never guess what they reveal until the climax. That shocker will leave the audience stunned with the revelation that Sylvia Kelso is the real thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars high recommend for a new author, September 13, 2006
This review is from: Everran's Bane (Paperback)
I picked this up a few weeks ago at the local library, and read it in a day. Had seen a blurb or some kind of mention by Lois McMaster Bujold, and since anything she touches is golden (in my opinion) I thought I'd give it a try. Very well done. Told from the perspecitve of the king's harper (since it's been a few weeks, I've already forgotton names.) He has worked his way to the pinnacle of a harper's ambition, and as such, is privvy to all aspects of the public and private lives of the king and queen. The king is beloved by all, cordial to the harper, but distant from him (who wouldn't be with your biographer watching your every move.) The harpist is fascinated by the king, in love with the beautiful queen, and likely to continue in this lifestyle unchanged - until the dragon comes. At that point, the harper goes beyond what is expected and accompanies the king and his troops to battle the dragon. They are unsuccessful, but in their quest to find a way to defeat the dragon, the harpist and the king become close companions, and (as much as the king is able) friends.

Very well written - great characterization. The two protagonists are both admirable and likeable. One reservation was the authors use of "native" words (especially for plants, trees and weapons). I had no clue what they were (kind of like reading an English book about Siberia with the occasional Russian word thrown in.) Usually I can figure it out by context, but it just wasn't clicking for me in this book - maybe because in most cases it didn't really matter what kind of plant or tree it was. It didn't stop me from plowing onward. The only other thing that bothered me was the rather shallow character development of the queen - I couldn't figure out what it was about her that made both of these rather spectacular men love her. Sure, she had beauty and a lovely voice - but that's all we were shown. Later in the book there is a great female character who helps the king develop new and interesting skills - she was interesting!

All in all, very well done. I look forward to more from Ms. Kelso.
