This book was a great guide to help me pick which trails I wanted to hike in the ADK. I especially liked how you could pick your hike based on category (i.e. which hikes give you the most seclusion). At the beginning of each hike is a rating system for scenery, trail conditions, etc. which is extremely helpful in deciding whether you would like to hike the trail or not. The maps (despite being in b/w)are nicely detailed and easy to read (although I would love it if there was a topo overlay but... there is an elevation profile shown separately). The trail description and directions are excellent and this book helped me twice (so far) where I could have made a wrong turn on the trail. I would recommend this book if you are planning on hiking in the ADK and would like some guidance/suggestions on which trails to hike.

This book made the difference between an OK vacation and a great vacation. The selection of the best hikes meant that we concentrated all our time on the best hikes in the area at the levels we were comfortable with . They have preselected and catalogued all the best areas to hike. They rated the hikes based on scenery, difficulty, children, and solitude The directions were easy to follow---and we wouldn't have found at least one of the best trailheads without their directions. The only caveat I have is that their idea of a "moderate to difficult" hike and mine is not the same----forget the moderate. We paired this with a book about Adirondack Waterfalls and were able to further select hikes to include interesting waterfalls.Adirondack Waterfall Guide: New York's Cool Cascades

I picked up this book hoping that it would serve as a valuable resource for some of the best hiking options in the Adirondacks. After reviewing the book and comparing it to other offerings, I feel a more appropriate title would be "Two-Star Trails in the Adirondacks." Most of the hikes are easy, with a few possibly deserving an easy-moderate rating. Many of the best summit hikes in the Adirondacks aren't even mentioned in this book, so if you are looking for a guide that points you to some of the better mountain hikes and views, you would do well to look elsewhere. Though there are some good hikes in this book, you simply will not experience the best of what the Adirondacks have to offer if you use this as your guide. Ultimately, I found myself turning to other resources.

The book itself is fairly well designed in terms of its organization and content. The book is organized based on park regions, and there are a number of hikes suggested for each region. The trail info is clear and the directions are understandable and accurate. My favorite part is the scenary rating given to each hike, which is something that I find useful when narrowing down my selections. Overall, my reservations aren't with the book design so much as they are with the hike choices.

This was a gift for my husband who is a backpacking leader with AMC. He has done hiking up in the 'Dacks but the rocky terrain can be daunting for some of his fellow hikers, so this book is really helpful in helping him plan trips. Recommended for the nature lover/hiker.

This is a nice book for hiking but there are 2 flaws:

1. There are some major typos in the "West Branch Sacandaga" trail directions. There are 2 trails here - supposedly a difficult "north" trail and an easier "south" trail, except the book gets north and south mixed up. The north trail is actually the easier, established trail. The book has a number of places "north" and "south" are transposed in inconsistent ways, and it is very confusing. There is a risk of the book sending inexperienced hikers off on a bushwhack where they have to a river.

2. The hiking times seem to be understated. Maybe we were just slow, but all the trails took at least 50% more time than the higher time the book claimed. So, if the book said a hike would take "two to three hours" it would take about 4 1/2 hours.

I am giving the book 4 stars despite these problems, because the selected hikes are were indeed very beautiful. Despite the typo, the West Branch Scandaga river walk was a great trail, and it's obscure enough we would never have found it or tried it without the book. We spent some time very confused looking for the easier "south" trail, and eventually figured out the boo was wrong.

I also liked the size of the book. It is pretty small and thin, which makes it nice for taking along on the trail. This means the information is more limited, but I think it's much nicer to have a book you can actually carry with you.

An excellent list of trails-for all ages and hiking abilities. One of my favorites, Castle Rock is explained in detail with some excellent pictures. The views from the summit are much more panoramic and beautiful than displayed in the book.

I would highly recommend this gem!
