5.0 out of 5 stars The calm in a storm!, November 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Five Stories (Audio CD)
Amid a monsterous storm of repetitive music coming out today, Kris Delmhorst's "Five Stories" is a welcome break from the norm. Being that I have never heard of her before (I found this CD by mistake) I was absolutely astonished by what I heard. Her songwriting skills (if it would be a skill, for it almost seems natural for her) are better than most all commercialized musicians on the scene today! None of the same old cliched music or lyrics, but genuine in feeling and style.

My favorite songs on the album currently are "Garden Rose" and "Yellow Brick Road" (the song that mesmerized me enough to buy this album), but I can't skip over any song at all being that they are that good!

Personally though, I wouldn't know another famous folk singer, but being a musician, I know talent when I see it! (or hear it for that matter!) If you want good music, buy this CD NOW!... or buy it from her website for faster service!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stellar project, October 31, 2002

It's impossible to go wrong buying this CD if you have any interest in singer-songwriters. I think the other reviews here already sum it up nicely, but it should be mentioned that many of the musicians on this album have been seen around Boston in their own successful projects. This includes Catie Curtis and Sean Staples of the Resophonics among many others. This album is well-played and given a sensitive treatment by capable hands. Add Kris's stellar voice and songwriting on top and you've got a great album that's difficult to remove from rotation. Buy without hesitation.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't stop playing this beauitful CD!, July 17, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Five Stories (Audio CD)
Kris Delmhorst stands out from within the "Girls with Guitars" genre as a unique, multi-faceted, wonderful singer and songwriter. Her lyrics are strong and dynamic paired with a natural and lovely voice. That girl plays a ton of instruments and showcases those talents well on songs like "Mean Old Wind." My favorite is "Broken White Line" with its classic-sounding folk-rock nature, well elevated by original story-telling lyrics. Appetite and the older EPs are great; but for a full-fledged, enjoyable album, FIVE STORIES is the way to go. You'll be satisfied from start to finish, and then, like me, you'll press play again and start the whole experience over for another round!

5.0 out of 5 stars Flying below the radar on 'Little Wings', September 8, 2002
By
Aaron J. Adler "ajadler7" (Reson, VA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Five Stories (Audio CD)
Kris Delmhorst has it all - a way with words, a voice that can communicate in a whisper or in a heart-aching, full-volume exclamation, and the ability to play a variety of instruments. Her use of metaphors is often clever and skillful, but not so heavy-handed that they beat you ever the head. She crafts exquisitely beautiful songs that those in pain can relate to while balancing them with others of strength and encouragement all the while with a sense of humor behind it all. Plus, if you ever meet her in person she's just about the sweetest person in the world! If the music business weren't so hung up on style and paid more attention to substance, Kris would shining in the national spotlight. Regardless, this CD is the best place to discover her talent and if the newer songs she's playing in concert are any indication, the next will be even better. Buy one copy for yourself and another for a friend and you will have them thanking you endlessly for introducing them to an artist they might never have otherwise discovered....

5.0 out of 5 stars A remarkable folk album from a budding star, July 15, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Five Stories (Audio CD)
My husband and I discovered Kris Delmhorst when she opened a Dar Williams show in Alexandria, Va. With her warm voice, catchy tunes and accessible lyrics, it was musical love at first site. I've since bought all her albums and am DYING for the next one to come out. My favorites on this one _ so far her best _ are "Broken White Line," and "Yellow Brick Road." She is right up there with Dar as one of my favorite artists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this CD, February 9, 2002
By A Customer

I first heard of Kris on a radio program featuring not-yet-released CDs. Based on one track, I was willing to buy the CD. Not at all disappointed. This CD wanders a range of musical styles and demonstrates musicality and flexibility. If you listen to Nanci Griffith, Sarah McLaughlin, Dar Williams, Patti Griffin, etc, you will enjoy this album. For me, one of the most best "new" artists I have heard in a long time. Though the CD explores different musical genres, it is still on the whole cohesive and enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars a light worth discovering, April 9, 2002

I stumbled upon Kris when she opened for Dar Williams at The Ark in Ann Arbor, MI. I found both her variences in musical and vocal stylings enchanting. At times she has the air of Melissa Ferrick, at others, she sounds straight of the hills of Kentucky. I am keeping my eyes and ears open to word of her growing popularity, which is in no doubt coming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Various moods, all great songs!, October 24, 2002

This album is so diverse, including a little bit of everything, that it's almost a surprise that everything is so good! Styles seem to cover bluegrass, ballads, folk rock, and everything in-between. The lyrics are superb- full of vivid imagery, and expressing a tremendous depth of emotion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Writing beauty, August 13, 2005
This review is from: Five Stories (Audio CD)
This cd has some of my favorite songs from Kris. All of the songs that made me a fan, in fact.

The writing here is eloquent and poetic. Her themes of love are carefully wrapped inside metaphors that will leave you speechless. I am so amazed at the expression these songs offer. There is an honesty here that will speak directly to your heart. Kris is a master at weaving words.

My favs from this disc: 'Damn Love Song', 'Words Fail You', 'Yellow Brick Road','Broken White Line' and 'Lullaby 101'.

If you are a fan of singer-songwriters then you will love this album.

By A Customer
This review is from: Five Stories (Audio CD)
i've seen kris live tons of times and have her first cd as well as her have earlier tape and have always been impressed, but "five stories" is phenominal.. she somehow manages to incorperate blue, rock and traditional bluegrass and still produce a record that flows as a complete entity.
